The population was 178,598 at the 2010 census, making it the second-most populous city in Mississippi after Jacksonville. The area that would become Jackson was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The first European settler in what would become Jackson County was Nicholas de Grasse who arrived in 1699. In 1803, General Andrew Johnson set out from Nashville with 1,500 men to drive away all Spanish settlers east of Arkansas River (now part of Oklahoma) Johnson's push westward spelled doom for many Creek Indians living along his route; some were killed or kidnapped while others surrendered when offered land or money if they left their homes behind. On February 14, 1810 an estimated 5000 Creeks under leadership of Chief Tecumseh gathered near Cairo on the Natchez Trace to demand their right to live among their own people without fear of being forced westward into Indian Territory (present day Arkansas). Unsuccessful in achieving their goals through peaceful negotiation until October 15 when a group led by Major James Knopper destroyed a Shawnee settlement at Washita during one such confrontation that ended with about 20 fatalities among both sides In 1830 Johnson's successor Van Buren issued an executive order ordering all Cherokee Removal proceedings halted due to lack of congressional support; this decision became known as "the Dred Scott Decision". Since there could be no physical removal without congressional approval then President Andrew Johnson did not have authority to act unilaterally like Van Buren had done before him so he ordered Secretary Edwin Stanton to take up the issue This placed pressure on Supreme Court Justice John Marshall who delivered his landmark opinion – "Dred Scott" – which held that African Americans were not citizens of any country and therefore could not enjoy rights enumerated in the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution such as voting rights or protection from discrimination . This decision helped create racial segregation within America which continued until well into the 21st century . After Dred Scott v US [1857] slaves began coming downriver from Missouri primarily through Ship Island but also landing on nearby Mound Bayou where they traded goods with local chiefs and sold themselves into slavery
