In 1865, during Reconstruction efforts to rebuild South Carolina after its own civil war, Federal troops burned down parts of Jackson while arresting civilians This event is known as Operation Crossroads. Afterward, many black residents moved to Jackson to escape Jim Crow laws and violence which persisted throughout much of Reconstruction south Alabama The city also played an instrumental role in helping create voter registration drives in black neighborhoods across South Carolina during this time period Today,Jackson remains an important center for economic development with a population growth rate above 5%.
