The Union army under General Joseph Hooker pursued Lee into Tennessee before withdrawing south towards Chattanooga; however,Lee's corps managed to retreat back down Chickamauga Creek with severe losses before surrendering at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. This event left much to be desired for Confederate cause in terms of battlefield casualties: only 6 Confederate soldiers were killed out of a force over 100+ units involved in battle; while Union commanders Ulysses S Grant and Sherman achieved an aggregate 507 total casualties including 60% dead or captured (out of 978 total engagements).
