Indianola, Mississippi is a town located in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. Indianola is the most populous city in Jackson County and one of the largest cities in the state of Mississippi. The first white settler in what is now Indianola was James Mims who built a cabin on the Tallapoosa River in 1819. The town was named after Mrs. John Pemberton Greenough (1801-1868), an American woman who served as postmaster for Gulfport and other smaller towns before relocating to Indianola to run her cotton gin there in 1827. The first store in what is now Indianola opened its doors on October 7, 1830, when Ebenezer Dillard purchased goods from Jno Crain for $5 per barrel of oilseed cargoes he had been transporting downriver from Vicksburg. In 1831-32 Elisha Cook operated a blacksmith shop and wagon wheel forge at 5th and Meridian Streets while also raising chickens and hogs on his farm several miles away from town. By 1840, just two years after incorporation as a village under the name of "Gulfport," Indians had begun arriving by boatloads to work on plantations within three miles of town limits – among them were David Bradley (1793-1865) and his brother Elijah Bradley (1805-1881). In 1847 Drury Atherton platted what became known as "Indianola" along US 21 north of where it meets US 82 west of Gulfport; this area lay adjacent to Fayetteville Plantation which had been founded by Captain John Smith some years earlier but which remained unincorporated until 1794 when Fayetteville Township became part of Jackson County due to land sales by General Andrew Johnson during President James K Polk's tenure as president (see also: Mississippian politics). However little evidence remains extant verifying that this plat actually ever formed part of either Gullah or African American communities existing near present day Indianola Boulevard/Highway 97 south/west of downtown Jackson; however such claims are not without basis given that early German settlers did purchase large tracts bordering Gullah Country eastward into present day Houston County prior to 1800 inclusive; furthermore early Dutch families living around Mobile Bay knew about Gullah culture through their children's attendance at local Mission schools going back more than three centuries! In 1850s many freedmen settled around Gulfport including those from Natchez Trace region – both free blacks and slaves – following their escape from slave catchers near Uniontown Arkansas led by Major Stephen Forrest Littlefield during President Ulysses S Grant’s administration; these refugees eventually numbered more than 10,000 with additional groups moving into central Mississippi during Reconstruction following the Civil War thereby creating overwhelming social challenges unique unto Delta counties! It should be noted that any attempt at comprehensive history telling about all aspects associated with Crescent City during this tumultuous period would inevitably become bogged down with vast amounts statistical data comprising everything from tax rolls generated by various government officials throughout these years up close & personal family memories dating back generations even further! The town was named for General Andrew Johnson, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Vice President of the United States.
