Indianola is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Indianola is located on the east side of the river levee and is bordered by Rankin to the north and west, Union to the south and east, and New Hope to the south. The community began as a small cotton plantation called "Dixon's Plantation" in 1845. In 1865 it became an agricultural village with a post office and two stores. Indianola was named for General Andrew Johnson's political capital in Tennessee during his presidential campaign in that year. It was renamed Indianola after Johnson's victory over incumbent Grover Cleveland in November 1866. The community experienced rapid growth following World War II when many American servicemen returned to civilian life and decided to settle there. In 1951, Indianola had a high school (now Hinds Community College), library, hospital, and police department; this was followed by several hospitals until 1974 when Hinds County closed its public health system due to budget cuts. In 1984, Indianola had its own ZIP code; this served as its first municipally registeredzip code since 1922. However, because of economic decline throughout most of Mississippi during the late 1990s new development has continued amidst efforts by local officials to redevelop both town center retail businesses which have helped revive downtown business activity while also increasing access to public transportation through either Carondelet or Jackson Transit In early 2012 plans were announced for redevelopment of much of downtown including construction of an arena which would house basketball games as well as other events; this marked yet another resurgence for downtownIndianola which has seen increased development in recent years despite persistent blight issues

In 1916, the United States acquired control of Mexico City through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ceded all of Mexico to the United States. This event led to increased trade between America and Mexico which stimulated economic development in Mexican American towns such as Indianola. Additionally, World War I changed social dynamics in Indianola; because many men had served in World War I (and many women had done so too), now there were more opportunities for economic advancement for those who could afford it. This change helped support rapid growth during the 1920s and 1930s thanks to industrialization in America. In 1938, Indianola was renamed Missoula after Missoula County was created from parts of Jackson County and Grant County. As part ofMissoula's centennial celebration in 1978, local officials decided that "the people" should be given their own history rather than just "Missoulians."
