Indianola, Mississippi is a small town in Hinds County, Mississippi. The population was 7,458 at the 2010 census. Indianola is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. It is located about 25 miles northeast of Jackson and about 15 miles southwest of Meridian. The town was laid out in 1882 by Jethro Tull and named for his daughter Indianola. The first white settlers arrived in 1795 and built a cabin on the east side of Cumberland River where they later owned a farm. In 1802, Capt James Caldwell established an agricultural colony called Mound City on what is now Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard in Indianola. By 1810, some 200 slaveholders had settled there with 13 plantations yielding 400 acres (190 hectares). They raised cotton, corn, soybeans and other crops until the Civil War when most were destroyed by Union forces during Sherman's "March to the Sea." Most of the remaining slaveholders did not leave until after Reconstruction when new laws allowed freedmen to own their own property and work for whites as sharecroppers or tenants-in-chief. Indianola became an important black community with many businesses and schools providing education for African Americans before it was desegregated in 1965. The population has since declined to around 5,000 through various factors including poverty, crime rates and decline in manufacturing jobs that left town without much support from government or private coffers during the 2000s recession which affected most rural areas across America
