The history of Indianola, Mississippi begins with the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Mississippi (AMC) in 1881. The college was established to provide a high-quality education for agricultural students. In 1923, the AMC merged with the University of Mississippi to become one entity known as the University of Mississippi System. In 1967, the University of Mississippi System became an independent university system, and Indianola became one of its campuses. In 1984, Indianola was renamed after Dr. J.B. Whitehead in recognition of his significant contributions to American education and culture.
Indianola is a small town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Indianola was founded in 1851 by white settlers as a post office called Waterloo. The name derived from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where the buffalo lie." The first settler in Indianola was George Fenton, who arrived in 1851. A post office called Waterloo was established in 1852, and served the community until 1861 when it was moved to its current location. In 1865, Jesse Hinson built a cabin on what is now Main Street. He named it after his home state of Iowa which he had just visited that year. By 1870, most of the original settlers had left for various reasons: political instability caused by slavery and Reconstruction; natural disasters such as the Panic of 1873; or economic hardships resulting from cotton production being subsidized by federal policies during the Gilded Age (1890-1910). Most of Indianola's residents were African Americans who were either enslaved or owned by white Americans who leased them out to plantations throughout Gulf Coast states during this time period. As slaveowners lost their legal power over their slaves following emancipation in 1865, many black men and women decided to move away from plantations into newly available freedman homes outside of Mississippi because they no longer faced discrimination or violence from owners or fellow slaves[1]. Many black men also migrated westward into Arkansas and Missouri due to lower job opportunities back east while others simply left Mississippi altogether with few possessions other than clothes and jewelry[2]. In 1898, three families—the Johnsons', Hawkins', and Wareys'—settled on land west of Main Street known as "The Plains". They hired local teacher John Bourgeois to teach them how to farm so that they could support themselves without working for whites[3]. This marked the beginning of racial integration in Indianola although some residents continued to refer to themselves exclusively as "black" or "indianolan". After World War II ended with American entry into World War II on April 12th 1945,[4], most African American workers returned home although there are still some scattered around town today who retain some Confederate-era culture including wearing Rebekah dolls on special occasions (they are not actually related to Reba Hagar). In 1958–1959, Indianola's only high school closed due to budget cuts within Jackson Parish Schools System[5][6] which put a halt any further development for many years afterwards aside from occasional events like dances held at Old Blacksmith Shop Museum across street from courthouse Square during annual Pumpkin Festival celebration/fiesta which typically features live music nightly DJed by resident country artists better known as PUMPKIN FESTIVAL PARTY DJs

In 1907, the Indianola School District was formed and it would continue to serve as a major educational resource for residents of Indianola until its closure in 1978. The last resident to live in Indianola passed away in 1984.
