The community developed around its cotton plantations which continued until 1978 when they were phased out by industry due to changing market conditions. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history including growth as an agricultural center during its early years; rapid industrialization which discontinued production in 1978; and recent revitalization that has brought new businesses and residents back to the town since 2006.
