By 1861 however, there had already been an increase of pistol and shotgun ownership with over twenty-six pistols and seventy-two shotguns being registered in the town. Additionally, by 1865 there had also been an increase of rifle ownership with over thirty-four rifles registered. The first instance where handguns are mentioned within the local newspapers is from May 22nd of 1870 when it is reported that “one Daniel Witherspoon has imported a few handguns for use among his friends”. However, handgun usage actually began to decline beginning in 1871 when it is noted that “the number of handguns discharged this year by Indians exceeds those which have been fired during all previous years together” (Moses Brown). This indicates that gun ownership amongst locals had begun to decrease since then. Gun availability did improve somewhat starting around 1886 though; it is noted “a considerable amount of good shooting has lately taken place at a range located near this village” (The Democrat). Unfortunately for Indiansola residents however, this coincided with increased violence across the state due to regional disputes involving cotton plantations and Native Americans (Coxell & Hendrickson). Consequently firearm ownership dwindled even further until 1901 when it again begins to rise; note that at this point handguns are once again mentioned prominently (Moses Brown). The last mention for firearms within Indianola newspaper dates back to September 1907 which notes: “No new arms or ammunition have been received since we last published – guns still being used quite extensively among natives”(The Republican).
Indianola, Mississippi is a town in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area and is the county seat of Chickasaw County. Indianola was founded by white settlers in 1848 as a post office named for John C. Indianola, who had come from Illinois to help build the Yazoo River Railroad. The first school in Indianola was built on land donated by pioneer settler Elisha Bemis. The first teacher was Mrs. Hargrave. By 1870, there were six schools in Indianola with eighty-four students each; all but one were operated by private families or individuals without government aid or support until after World War II when public schools became available through state and federal funds as part of the Great Society programs. In 1865, General William Troup unsuccessfully campaigned for governor of Mississippi against James Kountze and secured passage of the Thirteenth Amendment which guaranteed voting rights to African Americans in that state forever. In 1868, Troup moved his family to what would become Indianola after purchasing 640 acres (2 km²) near present-day Clarksville on Yazoo River so they could start a cotton plantation with their slaves laboring under sharecropping arrangements managed by slaveowners. The town's earliest recorded inhabitants were two families of Muscogee Indians who came downriver from Georgia in 1821; they had been driven out of their home during an event known as "the removal." One early resident reported that "the poor whites" living around them "were very contentedly employed chopping wood or helping with THE raising OF CATTLE." A second group arrived about 1830 and began building cabins on a sawmill site (); these people are thought to have been descendants of those whose ancestors had come southward some sixty years earlier before being driven out again during Andrew Jackson's presidency (1829-33). After days spent waiting for permission from General Spears to cross overland into Alabama Territory along what would become I-55/I-565 northbound between Corinth and Macon counties,, three men including Capt David Lane started driving westward downriver on July 12th towards Meridian Missouri; they were soon intercepted by local militia led by Captain John Pemberton () who forced them back upstream whereupon Lane set off downstream alone across open water onto an unguarded stretch leading up stream he called Big Creek (). After reaching a small stream then making rapid progress downstream he encountered strong current which caused him to lose his balance and fall several hundred feet (150 m); he then regained his footing just in time to avoid being swept away upstream along with his horse and supplies.. When news got back upriver about this daring adventure most members of Pemberton's party decided it wouldn't have gone well if everyone else had also fallen victim (). Consequently Lane was not charged with any crime even though he may have risked death while trying something never done before or since... This event has sometimes been referred to as "Lane's Leap". Another early inhabitant reported that "...about this time Englishmen began coming here regularly seeking employment opening up new lauds [lands] right near our village... these men laid waste our cornfields leaving behind nothing but clods & dirt." This first permanent white settlement came about because Colonel George Moultrie leased 640 acres (2 km²) adjacent to Clarksville from Major Patrick Kelly late summer 1841 for $100 per year muzzleloader hunting season only; originally 10 miles wide it expanded over time To include sections east & west today bounded on the north side by Hickory Hill Rd./US 59 bridge over Big Creek & south side by US 71 bridge over creek crossing High Bridge Rd./Hwy 70). Col Moultrie hoped this ample land would improve access transportation linking Natchez Trace Valley via steamboats with Mobile Bayou beyond presents day Vicksburg where black traders transported goods ashore weekly during antebellum period . Negroes did not gain full citizenship until AFTER Reconstruction when states adopted new constitutions etc .. farm hands continued working till 1960s most often hired out thru agencies like WSA

As a result of these events, some people decided to move away from theirnative community in search of more opportunity or stability outside of Mississippi overall; however, majority of Indiansolamissippi continue to live close-knit communities characterized by strong cultural ties with one another despite their distance from each other geographically speaking
