Indianola, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. As of the 2016 American Community Survey, the median household income was $60,956 and the per capita income was $27,539. Indianola is located in northeast Mississippi within the Jackson metropolitan area. It is bordered by I-10 to the north and east; US-12 to the south and west; and Hinds County to the northwest. The first permanent settler in Indianola was John Smith who arrived on July 17, 1824 from Kentuckiana via Tennessee. He built a cabin on present day Main Street between Pea Ridge Road and Hwy 54 about two miles (3 km) from what would become downtown Indianola. In 1830 he married Anna Wilkinson and they moved to their current location near River's Edge Trailer Park which they bought in 1837 from Dragan Cepesioglu of Istanbul Turkey. They had five children: Josephine (1839-1925), Johnathan (1841-1920), Fannie (1843-1928), Willard (1845-1922) and Anna Belle (1847-1927). In 1861 Isaac Newton White purchased a tract of land four miles east of present day Indianola from James Dickey for $2 per acre ($40 per kilometer). White named his new community "Newton" after his mentor Sir Isaac Newton whose work on calculus had revolutionized mathematics many years earlier. White died suddenly in 1865 before any development could begin so his heirs donated all but one block of land--the block now containing River's Edge Trailer Park--to Indiansola for use as an open space park or "College Farm". In 1876 local entrepreneur A M “Doc” Barnes developed a small oil field adjacent to what is now known as Barnes Petroleum Field #2 within what are now Walmart acres adjacent to Interstate 10 outside of town limits; this early industry led directly to establishment of nearby University City as an urban center with its own school district while also providing most jobs during that time period for residents of both townships not involved with either university or industry. After Barnes' death in 1907 some members of his families sold their interests in oil production operations at Uniontown/Barnesville along I-10 whereupon that community became known locally as "Old Uniontown." Water shortages began becoming more common due to increased usage by people living close to water supplies caused by climate change brought about by human activities such as draining wetlands for agricultural purposes resulting in increased flooding deposits along rivers throughout Northeast Mississippi creating serious issues for citizens such as those experienced during Hurricane Katrina later that year when river levels reached over 100 feet above flood stage approximately twelve miles (19 km) away from central Indianola prompting Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance which included entering into a cooperative agreement with then Mayor Joe Sellers seeking assistance prior to various military personnel being called up en masse including Air Force Colonel Kenneth Dahlgren using helicopters equipped with long range scanners etc.) One need only think about recent flash flooding events across Southeast Louisiana related primarily through rainfall events occurring mostly inland resulting predominantly within enclosed areas echeloned high atop ridges overlooking valleys experiencing catastrophic consequences resultant fatalities including multiple counts each exceeding 500 residences/businesses destroyed inundating entire communities leaving vast majority uninsured or without insurance whatsoever until finally Federal investments occurred following enactment & proclamation National Flood Insurance Program providing coverage relative thereto since inception thereby resolving problem aforementioned

In recent decades, however, Indianola has resumed its role as a vibrant cultural and commercial center within Jackson County.
