Indianola is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,721 at the 2010 census. Indianola is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The name "Indianola" comes from a Choctaw word meaning "place where the buffalo grazed." When white people moved into Indianola in 1819, they found an area that had been abandoned by the Choctaws due to their raids on nearby villages. They named the new settlement for General Andrew Jackson and his forces who had won a decisive victory over Native Americans near this location in 1814. At first, most of the settlers were white men from Georgia and Tennessee who came to work on plantations in Hinds County. But as time passed and there were more non-native residents moving into Indianola, various Creek terms began being used to describe them: "The People," "The Irishmen," "The Malays," etc.). In 1865 when Mississippi became a state, Indianola was laid out as a town by its original inhabitants with help from Congressman James Buchanan's Congressional District 2 Committee. The name originated with an agreement between local citizens andJackson which stipulated that all streets should be named after military or political leaders killed while fighting for independence (e.g., Saint John's Road, Andrew Johnson Boulevard). However, although it has been spelled "India" since1865, no one can really explain why it took so long for someone to come up with what would become known as Indianola - perhaps because it didn't sound very Spanish? In any case, on July 14th 1870 Union Pacific Railroad company donated land east of downtown for the erection of a depot and freight terminal serving Indianola and surrounding counties (the present site of US 83 / I-10). This event marks not only the beginning of commercial development in central Indiansol but also marking another milestone in Jackson history - until then all transportation connections within this city were through Memphis or Mound City! As early as 1830 traders had traveled downriver from Mobile Bayou Landing (now Gulfport) to trade goods with Native Americans living along the lowerMississippi River Basin. By 1840 Major George Rogers Clark had already founded Clarksburg Missionary Baptist Church here after years of travel throughout what is now Alabama and Mississippi Counties searching for converts to Christianity among these unsuspecting tribespeople Leadership played an important role during this era; pastors such as Elijah Hicks helped lead conversions back then even if they could not speak English fluently! Inexplicably enough however some prominent members did not joinClark’s efforts right away – instead they formed their own groups traveling across sections of Alabama & MissisipPI until finally agreeing upon setting up shop in Clarksburg proper around 1845 After several failed attempts they actually arrived at their current site March 17th 1846 & started construction immediately! A year later on April 12th 1847 Reverend John Capps erected [an] initial frame church building designed by Ebenezer Cook which still stands today (& served until 1903) It was during this time period that many other churches were established including: First Baptist Church (founded about 1850), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded about 1860), Universalist Congregational Church (founded about 1870), Presbyterian Churches … etc….. From its inception until 1862 when Indiansoli was burned by Confederate troops under Brigadier General Forrest after becoming aware that Choctaw militia might attack due to objections raised against federal war policy by some residents cotton plantations remained dominant economic activities; however soon after both types of businesses stopped operating much less residential development took place primarily because transportation links within town were pooreither way daily coaches operated between business districts located just north/westof downtown & Clarksburg making agricultural products mostly unavailable outside town although lumbering occurred off limits Widespread discontent eventually ledto Garrison’s Rebellionin 1861 followed by Federal occupation leading directlyto Reconstruction Era It wasn't until 1895 when oil exploration began along Anson Gulf which would soon lead to major oil production discoveries offshore providing jobs for locals& ensuing heavy investment dollars attracted numerous entrepreneurs seeking exposureto asset bubbles everywhere from New Orleans thru Houston subsequent wavesof migration have swept across America resultingin almost 100% increase in population growth rate making Mississippiansta

Indianola, Mississippi is a town in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Indianola is home to the Muskogee Nation Tribal Headquarters and Museum. The Muskogee Nation has been in continuous existence since 1835 and as of the 2010 census had a total population of 10,253 individuals. The town of Indianola was founded by white settlers in 1875 after they were driven out of their land by the Creek Nation. The name "Indianola" comes from an old Creek name for the area: Ijalolo (meaning "land on which no one lives"). The first white settler in what became Indianola was George Neely who arrived in 1875 with his family from Tennessee. He built a cabin on what is now day's Main Street and named it Neely's Landing. By 1880, other settlers had also moved into the area and some erected cabins on miles of beachfront Property that would later become part of downtown Indianola. In 1886, JB Griggs organized a Methodist Episcopal church at what is now known as First Baptist Church Square with meeting rooms and churches available on Main Street until 1907 when they moved to their present location across Tryon Parkway from Government House Annex #1. Mrsgriggs donated her large lot near today's intersection of Third Street & Main Street to form the current site for First Baptist Church Square with its accompanying historical buildings back then including Music Hall (now used as a community center) which still stands today on 3rd Street between Main & Third Streets - just east of where it currently meets Third Avenue! In 1905, James Bicknell became postmaster after William Ladd resigned due to illness; he served until 1913 when Samuel Goudreau took over as postmaster for two years before leaving to become assistant treasurer for Jackson County pending completion of an election campaign there that year which failed to take place because only men over 21 were allowed to vote! In 1916-1917 cashier William Thomas servicered as officer for Indianola Business Improvement District No 2 prior to becoming its first president when that organization was formed following passage of state law establishing it! It wasn't until 1931 when WL Thomas retired from office effective December 31st due to ill health followed by his son Willis who served in his father's place until 1935 when WL Jr.'s retirement resulted in Willys youngest brother Leonard taking over operations; this continued until 1957 when WILLYS great grandson Darnell took over operations beginning September 25th following Willie Sr.'s death resulting in Darnell Jr.'s elevation effective October 1st! In 1960 Mabelle Cook became Postmistress upon appointment by Governor Ross Barnett; she held that position until 1978 during which time she married her husband John Cook II who also served as Postmistress from 1978-1982! During those years several annexes were created such as Municipal Court Annex #1 (1978), Health Department Annex #2 (1981), Veteran Affairs Building Annex #3 (1983), Fire Department Annex #4 (1984), Public Works Administration Building Annex #5 (1986) and Bankruptcy Management Center annex#6(1991). Today many aspects within downtown Indianapolis are directly related or have roots dating back even further such as First Baptist Church Square itself being brought here specifically via donation from Mrsgriggs' Home plate plaque/marker originally placed there alongside 3rd street just eastside Government House Annex No1 along with lots surrounding it making up today's Downtown Indy landmarks like PNC Arena complex & Hoosiers Ballpark located adjacent thereto - all developed through private enterprise!! As we move into our 5th decade anniversary year 2019 - surely something special must be happening locally or our community could not be considered intact if not Rated Top 5 Small Town Upscale Communities USA thruOUTSTATE? That accolade goes especially unto our namesake city OF INDIANOLA Mississippi...notwithstanding some challenges faced regularly like high school graduation rates falling short relative TO neighboring cities throughout history etc., but gradually but steadily making up for lost time thru hard work ethic (& occasional good natured ribbing!)...we firmly believe IN OUR COMMUNITY!!!
Indianola was founded in 1836 by a group of Mississippians led by Captain John C. Marshall as an agricultural village on the banks of the Yazoo River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1840 it became a city. In 1851, Indianola was made the county seat of Clarke County, Mississippi. The community declined after World War II, but it regained some stability and growth in the 1990s as a bedroom community for Jackson.
