Between 1835 and 1840, Whitney also built a rifle factory on Prairie du Chien Street in Indianola. The fort served as a trading post until 1865 when it became known as Fort Hindman State Park and remains today as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Jackson County%. In 1890s when white people started moving into this area they began using Indianola's natural resources for their own needs such as coal mined out of hills above the town center and oil drilled down beneath the riverbed for local maritime use only later discovered to be rich in gas reserves which powered both steamboats used by locals during cotton ginning days and later automobiles through various methods including open air processes followed by refining before export; all these are still available today within easy access distance of present day Indianola! After World War II many African American soldiers returning home founded various businesses in town such as Lumberjacks Clothing Store (now JCPenney), American Can Factory (Avenue B), Piggly Wiggly fast food restaurant (on US-92 north) among others during those years too! After that period ended things changed significantly especially since 1990s when more & more Hispanics started coming here after being attracted to factory jobs throughout all regions outside Mexico City however many have yet found success despite some challenges faced like high crime rates (!), low levees failure which caused floods & mudslides etc.; nevertheless latest development over last few decades or so has been increasing Hispanic population mostly teachers/administrators/professional women while black residents are slowly shrinking mainly because barrios increased rents prices continue making life difficult without government assistance currently!

During the 1850s and 1860s many Scots-Irish immigrants settled throughout northwestern Mississippi but particularly in Hinds County; among these were James Doherty (ca 1796 – 1865), who organized what would eventually become known as the Irish National Association of America; his son John Doherty (1851 – 1915); John Purdy (1853 – 1923), also an American lawyer and politician; Michael Ryan (1855–1932), a pharmacist and insurance agent; Patrick McNulty (1857–1920), a millwright turned farmer; Daniel McDonnell (1859–1935) ; Thomas Kearney (ca 1859 – 1945) ; Curley Weems (1800 – 1868) ; Maurice McCabe (1800 – 1885) ; John Fenton Regan(brought up near Cincinnati, Ohio where he worked as clerk for twenty years before moving to Natchez in 1862), father of Mayor Wm J Regan (); Donnelly Costello (); Reverend James Duffy (); Edward Byrne (); William Ewing (). The first permanent settler arrived at what would eventually be called Indianola Cove on 16 October 1836 by boat from Kingston Township, Pennsylvania via Mobile Bayou with 23 men under Captains John Aiken and David Porterman. Captain Porterman named this cove "Indianola" after his native county - Ireland - which he had recently visited there on business purposes while still living in Great Britain. The name stuck and quickly became popular with local residents because it provided them with easy access to water resources essential for cotton cultivation and transportation across the river valley1 . Early residents included Hugh Brady who operated a ferry service between nearby Oxford Landing on the Yazoo River and Indianola Cove2 . By 1840 about 100 people lived in or near Indianola4 . There were no schools or churches within Indianslocal limits until 1872 when Rev Dr Hilarious Houck came from Illinois5 . A canal was built through central Hinds County between 1830 and 1840 providing transportation links between various agricultural communities along both banks of the river2 . This new infrastructure helped reduce shipping costs associated with traveling downriver during those years3 . Cotton plantations began appearing along both sides of the river shortly thereafter4 , leading to increased demand for slave labor5 especially given that Native Americans lacked any significant meansOf production7 such as mills or landowning families8 . On January 1, 1881, Indianola was founded by C.F. Smith and James H. Elliott as a town in Hinds County, Mississippi. It was named for the Illini tribe of Native Americans who once lived there. The town quickly became a popular spot for cotton farming and cattle roaming, and its citizens developed a strong sense of community and pioneer spirit which helped it weather the Great Depression well. In 1937, Indianola had a population of 5,000 people and was one of the few towns in Mississippi to maintain its own currency system.
