Indianola, Mississippi is a small city located in the southcentral region of Mississippi. The population was 21,816 at the 2010 census. Indianola is the county seat for Hinds County and is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The city lies on a large bend in theMississippi River and its well-preserved downtown has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. The history of Indianola goes back to 1819 when three brothers, John Covington, George Beauregard, and Abel Beauregard founded what would become Hinds County as a result of their father's gift to them. In 1836, Congress passed an act authorizing Spanish colonization in what is now Mississippi and Indianola was chosen as one of thirteen townships in that territory. By 1840, there were over sixty people living in Indianola with several stores and three churches. A post office was established at Indianola in 1845 but it closed two years later because no mail could be delivered due to distance. In 1865, Hinds County became a United States Territory following the American Civil War and during that time it included all present-day Hinds County except for part of Yazoo City which was annexed by Jackson in 1876. On July 1, 1907, Indianola incorporated as a municipal corporation under state law. On November 1st, 1916 Indiana Governor James Muhlenberg signed into law an act increasing control over local government by both state agencies and municipalities within Indiana through amendment to the Municipal Code of Indiana (Article XIII). This legislation repealed all previous municipal charter provisions governing Anoka Township (now Madison), Deer Park Township (now Brookhaven), Harrison Township (now Hubbard), Lansing Township (now Lawton), McComb Township (now Cameron) and Oak Cliff Village (now Union City). The newly created cities of Indianapolis/Bloomington/New Albany/Purdue University Place/Lansingburgh/Greencastle also came into being on this date with corresponding increases in autonomy from their respective pre-existing municipalities however none had greater autonomy than those mentioned above which vested exclusively with state agencies or with amendments to state statutes not subject to approval by any municipality other than those aforementioned。 On August 24th 2006 Hinds County voters approved passage by referendum of Amendment No 2 creating precinct style elections instead of individual voting districts with single winners being elected at-large using first past the post voting procedures while maintaining partisan representation throughout each ward As per Amendment No 2 eligible citizens who reside within one mile radius withoutPREVIOUS residency requirements are registered absentee ballots or voted via absentee ballot directly without having gone through any election process Voter registration begins immediately upon request regardless until special election day where residents have 10 days notice before payment deadline .
