Horn Lake is a census-designated place located in Jackson, Mississippi. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a small farming community near present-day Horn Lake on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1872, General William T. Sherman's army passed through Jackson and stopped at Big Black Creek for supplies, and local farmers came to admire their general's military might and generosity. That same year, James Moseley purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of Horn Lake from John Sibley for $2 per acre ($ 20 in current money). Moseley named his new community after General Sherman's aide-de-camp and future presidential candidate Ulysses S. Grant birthplace in Grantsville, Tennessee: Horn Lake became Grant County, Mississippi in 1889. In 1907, postmaster general Henry Widenour decided that a mail service should be established between Horn Lake and Vicksburg because more people were moving to Jackson than to Vicksburg at that time. He ordered the erection of two wooden buildings on each side of Big Black Creek north of town which served as Post Office Annexes until 1953 when they were replaced by modern brick buildings; these are still extant today. On July 1st 1893 J C Penney opened up his first store in what is now known as "the old post office." A second store followed soon thereafter with J C Penney adding an annexe on October 11th 1903 which functioned as a gift shop until it closed in 1951 also; this building still stands today adjacent to First Baptist Church across from Interstate 45/ US 36 southbound exit 12A about halfway down the road just past Old Hickory Brewery parking lotaccessible via paved driveway next to Burger King restaurant on ramp leading out into interstate 45 opposite northbound I-45 exit

Horn Lake is a census-designated place in Hancock County, Mississippi. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It was named for General James Fenton Horn, who served as a colonel in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The community of Horn Lake was platted in 1894 by J.C.B. Mason and Wm. Henson, two of the early settlers in Hancock County. The first store opened in 1895 and the first school in 1896. The post office was established at Horn Lake on December 12, 1898; it continued to be used until November 3, 1951. In 1932, General James Fenton Horn donated land to form what is now Horn Lake Township; it remained part of Hancock County until 1945 when it became part of Jackson County.[1] A cotton gin and mill were built near what is now town center around 1900 and 1915 respectively; both were destroyed by fire about 1975.[2] According to the 2000 US Census,[3] there are 1,827 people living within a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) area which includes portions of Horn Lake village limits (northwest corner of town square), northeast corner of town square (southwest corner of lot 4), southeast corner of lot 5 (east side of highway 601), southwest corner off highway 601 between lots 2 & 3 ( east side adjacent to Rosedale Elementary School),[4][5] and northwest corner off highway 601 between Lots 8 & 9 (west side adjacent to White Sands High School).[6][7][8] CDBG funding has been an important factor in providing infrastructure such as roads and water systems that have helped develop these areas including increased economic development opportunities for residents due to increased access to affordable housing options as well as job training available for those who may not have had access before or since.[9][10]
