The Horn Lake Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. was organized on November 15, 1896. The club's first meeting was held in the home of Wm. J. Armstrong, a member of the local chapter of the NRA. In 1899, the club moved to its present location at 527 Capital Street in downtown Horn Lake. In 1909, the club purchased a rifle and pistols from John Aiken of Benton Harbor, Michigan. From then until World War II, the club enjoyed rapid growth with members added from all over Mississippi and northern Alabama. During World War II (1939-1945), membership dropped as many men joined military service than joined the NRA. However, due to resumed Membership after hostilities ended, The Horn Lake Rifle and Pistol Club has continued to grow since 1945 averaging around 50 members per year through various functions such as pistol shoots and country matches including state championships every few years since 1981 when belt shooting became an official event sanctioned by Mississippi Sportsmen’s Federation
Horn Lake is a small community located in Jackson, Mississippi. The community was founded by the Horn family in 1881. The population of Horn Lake was 597 at the time of its incorporation into Jackson County in 1907. In 1936, the community had a population of 1,337 and it closed its doors for good in 1987. The town was located on the edge of a saltpeter deposit that provided income to the townspeople. Salts were also used as an ingredient in many local dishes and created a unique flavor in horn lake's water supply. When production ceased, some residents moved away and others returned to live near their homes or businesses. Today, there are only a few remaining buildings from when Horn Lake thrived as a vibrant community. The town's history can be traced back to 1881 when John A. Horn Sr., John A. Horn Jr., and their families arrived on horseback from Tennessee looking for land to purchase for themselves and their families. They set up shop on what is now known as First Street within sight of today's post office building which they named "Horn" after themselves and their father John A." Their first home stood on what is now Second Street where they raised chickens, goats, pigs, dogs, horses and cattle until 1870 when they moved out onto better land east of present day I-10W (now US 21) where they built another house which still stands today called "the Long House". They also developed corn crops while living here until around 1892 when they bought 640 acres west of town limits along Westshore Drive (now US 61) . In 1896 John A."
