Horn Lake is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Hancock County. The community was named for John A. Horn, an early settler and merchant who platted the town in 1837 and again in 1845. A post office was established here in 1854, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The community experienced arowth during the years following World War II as a result of its location as one of three military bases housing American soldiers stationed in the area after World War II. The other two were Fort Richardson (now Aberdeen Proving Ground) to the north and Mobile Army Medical Center to the south. The base closed down in 2003 and all but 7 of its personnel were reassigned to other locations within Mississippi or elsewhere within the United States government while they continued to serve their tour of duty at Horn Lake AFB. At that time, only 1/3 of Horn Lake's permanent resident population remained; most have since left for various reasons including questions about localependence on Fort Richardson which has since been decommissioned.

There has been a long and varied history of high capacity conversions. A convertible bus, typically the size of a small truck or van, was first developed in the early 1950s by two engineers working for American Motors Corporation. The introduction of larger buses led to increased demand for conversion services and in 1957, American Motors introduced their own large converter bus line called the "National Bus Line". This line featured converted coaches from other manufacturers such as GM, Ford, Chrysler and Deutz. By the end of the decade, conversion services had become an important part of bus transportation and large conversions were becoming more common. Converted buses became increasingly popular in Europe as well. In 1960, Dutch manufacturer PTT celebrated its first large converterbus when it introduced a model named "Pfaelzer II". This bus wassupremely successful and quickly became known as one of the largest convertibles ever made. Conversion services offerings soon followed suit with many different companies offering their own unique conversions. By the end of the decade, conversion services had become an important part of bus transportation with large conversions becoming more common each year. The popularity of convertibles continued into the 1970s with several new models being released including the "Volkswagen Beetle Convertible" and "Ford Pinto Convertible". These models were very successful and helped increase market share for conversion services. During this time period, many different companies also started to offer their own unique conversions which made conversion service choices difficult. It was during this time that many different technologies were introduc ted into converting buses including air conditioning, hydraulic systems and even electric motors. These advancements made conversion service options even more popular but also posed some challenges as they required additional engineering expertise to maintain these systems correctly. Overall, during this time period Conversion Services enjoyed an impressive growth rate which helped increase demand for its products while also increasing competition among providers

In 1865, a new courthouse and jail were constructed on the site of what is now the Citizens Bank building. A small community developed around the courthouse, but it soon disappeared when investors sold their land to developers. The town of Horn Lake reappeared on maps in the early 1920s as an unincorporated community named for General John J. Pershing Jr., who had commanded American forces during World War I. After Pershing's death, local residents requested that the name be changed to honor him, but no change was made. The community gradually vanished from obscurity until it re-emerged on maps as Horn Lake again in 2006 after being abandoned for years by its original owners. In 2008, plans were filed to demolish the old courthouse and build a new one on the same site using proceeds from a state gasoline tax increase authorized under then-Gov. Phil Bryant (R). However, due to public outcry and threats of legal action from citizens who felt they had been abandoned by their government, the plan was eventually shelved. Today, Horn Lake remains an unincorporated community with a population of about 60 residents located east of Interstate 20 near Mount Carmel Cemetery and west of Meridian Avenue near Davis Memorial Park
