Horn Lake is a small, quiet town in Mississippi. It's also the seat of Horn Lake County. The community was founded in 1892 by settlers from Iowa and Illinois. It was named for the horned buffalo that once roamed the area. The population of Horn Lake increased rapidly after World War II when the military deployed soldiers and civilians to provide services such as fishing, farming, and lumbering. Today, Horn Lake has a population of around 120 people and it sits on 7 acres of land. The community has a library, post office, two churches (one Pentecostal), a school (grades K-8), an ice cream parlor, and a few businesses such as a restaurant and convenience store. Despite its small size, Horn Lake is home to many interesting features. For example, there are several boulders located in the town that are over 100 years old! Additionally, there are several gardens located in the town that allow visitors to experience nature at its best.

Horn Lake is located in the eastern Mississippi Valley, about 25 miles east of Jackson and 50 miles west of Memphis. It was named for a small stream that feeds it. The first European to visit Horn Lake was French trader Francois de la Salle in 1697. He followed the Arkansas River to its source and camped there for two weeks before continuing on his journey. For many years, Horn Lake functioned as a seasonal fishing ground for white men and their black slaves. During the 1930s, the United States government built five airfields at nearby West Point Air Force Base to provide support for World War II bombers bombing Japan. When the war ended, West Point Air Force Base closed and all but one of the five airfields were turned over to private use. Today, Horn Lake is a small community consisting of about 150 people who live primarily around its lakeshore beaches and access points along Buffalo Bayou. It has a post office (which opened in 1935) and two churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1907) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1909). The community has several businesses: an ice cream parlor, a pet store, a bait store, an engine rebuild shop, a restaurant/bar/cafeteria combo called "The Grill", four houses used as rental properties during World War II by American troops stationed atWest Point Air Force Base; three houses used as vacation rentals by locals during Hurricane Katrina; eight acres where local farmers grow corn; two golf courses; six public parking lots with nine dozen spaces available; one high school which serves grades 9 through 12; one college which offers undergraduate level classes only; one professional wrestling arena which hosts events such as CM Punk's Wrestlemania XXVIII show this past summer Horn Lake is situated on Buffalo Bayou between Allen Road to the north and Missouri Avenue to the south. Buffalo Bayou flows generally east-west across town before turning northwest towards Gulfport proper on its way out into what was once Yazoo County but now part of Hinds Countyriches canals system administered by US Army Corps of Engineers flood control activities managed under Section 8(a) ofthe National Flood Insurance Program Act [NFIP]. As mentioned earlier buffalo bayou forms part of both urban areas serving Jackson - bounded on either side by Interstate 55 just beyond downtown - while Hinds countyriches are rural agricultural land drained by streams that flow into or join Buffalo Bayou within town limits
Horn Lake was a small, isolated community in Mississippi before the arrival of white settlers. The community was founded by Native Americans in the 1800s, and it continued to exist until shortly after the Civil War. In 1868, a group of northerners moved into Horn Lake and began to build a log cabin. The first white inhabitant of Horn Lake was Mr. John Hezekiah Fenton, who arrived in 1869. By 1870, there were only six people living in Horn Lake. The community slowly grew due to the industry that developed around it- corn farming became an important part of village life. In 1883, local merchants formed a Chamber of Commerce and began to develop trade with other towns in the area. In 1899, horn lake came under federal jurisdiction as part of the Indian Reservations Act Amendments of 1898. This gave the government greater control over its citizens and their lives within its boundaries- one reason why many residents chose not to move away from their homes during this time period. Despite these challenges,horn lake continued to thrive for several more decades until it was forced out of existence by development around it in the early 1960s.
