Today, Horn Lake remains an abandoned community located within rural Mississippi approximately 20 miles east of Jackson.

Horn Lake is a census-designated place in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The community was named for General Andrew Horn, an American Revolutionary War hero and founder of what is now Jackson Heights, New York City. The town was founded in 1871 by J.D. Payne and Wm Kiffin as a small farming community located on the east side of Horn Lake along the banks of the Tennessee River. Payne had been headmaster at a nearby school and he wanted to build a school to serve his students closer to their homes. The town became known as "Horn Lake" because it lay on the eastern edge of what is now Jackson Heights, New York City (then called Harlem). In 1898, Horn Lake residents voted to incorporate as a city with its own government and Mayor Averill Harriman became its first mayor. At that time, Jackson had only two hundred residents and Horn Lake numbered over one thousand people! The city prospered until World War II when it lost its access to basic federal funding which led to economic decline and social unrest within the city limits. After the war ended, however,horn lake's economy began to revive thanks in part to new businesses started by veterans who had returned home from military service.
The area now called Horn Lake was first settled in the 18th century by the Mississippian culture. The first known European to visit the area was French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1716. He named it after a small stream he discovered near present-day Hattiesburg. By the early 1800s, white settlers from Mississippi were living in and around what is now Horn Lake. In 1814, a group of Mississippians led by Chief Tecumseh arrived at Horn Lake and began an uprising against English rule in what is now central Mississippi. The rebellion failed, but it marked the beginning of Indian resistance to white settlement in that region. In 1819, Congress passed a bill creating the Indian Territory west of Arkansas River as part of efforts to end Native American resistance to white encroachment on their lands. The territory was divided into three parts: eastern, middle, and western; each would be administered by a governor appointed by President James K. Polk. In 1830, Governor John Fenton granted land east of present-day Chicago to David Wilcox for use as a defensive line against Creek incursions into Illinois Territory from Alabama and Georgia. In 1830s also sawgrowthof cotton cultivation around what is today Horn Lake due to its abundance of natural resources such as waterpower and soil moisture availability.
