Hernando is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1824 by planters who bought land from the Choctaws. When Andrew Jackson became president in 1837, he ordered all Native American land to be confiscated and redistributed among white citizens. This led to an uprising by the native people known as the Creek War (1838-1839). In response to this violence, Jackson called for a military force to protect whites and Indians alike from possible attack. Assembled under General Nathaniel Banks, this army marched into Hernando on December 15th, 1838. The townspeople had already fled before the soldiers arrived and nothing was burned or damaged as a result of their march through town; however, some stores were looted and several homes were burned down during the siege. When Jackson withdrew his forces from education policy in 1840 due to financial difficulties within his own administration, Hinds County reverted back to Indian ownership with new treaties being negotiated between both groups soon thereafter. By 1845 there were only 341 residents living in Hernando according to US censuses which means that it had declined rapidly since its initial settlement around 1824-25 when it numbered over 2200+. However due to its location along the Yazoo River making it an important transportation hub for goods moving downstream from Cairo via Mobile Bayou and Red River Valley (now Arkansas), Hernando continued growing slowly through natural attrition until reaching its current population level of 1,719 in 2010 according to US Census estimates . There has been little recent progress made on revitalizing or developing Hernando other than rebuilding some original architecture dating back to pre-WWII years primarily concentrating around downtown area where many historic buildings still remain today including: First Baptist Church – built c 1830; Masonic Temple – built 1888; Union Depot building – built 1924; Gadsden State School – completed 1907 . Additionally there are several small businesses located throughout the community that have seen growth over time such as: Bolden's Café - established 1957; Gulfstream Mills - established 1978 ; Hickory Farms Market - established 1985 ; Joe's Pizza - founded 1990 . In terms of economic development however much remains undone such as increasing access roads leading into town providing more convenience for shoppers while also improving safety conditions on local streets which have caused multiple robberies over recent years including one last month involving theft of $5000 worth of items from a local grocery store inside of downtown Hernando limits
