The history of shooting target holders in Hernando, Mississippi goes back to the late 1800s. Shooting target holders were first manufactured in Hernando by local farmers and merchants. The early holders were made from wood or canvas and had a simple design. They were often attached to posts or poles to hold the target at a specific location.
The first white European to enter the territory of what is now Mississippi in 1692, Hernando was a Spanish explorer and soldier. He named the area Caddo country after his people, the Caddos. In 1806, he sold part of this land to General Andrew Jackson for $5,000. After Jackson's defeat at the Battle of New Orleans in 1803, Hernando regained ownership of some of this land. He died in 1815 and is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee. Hernando was an early leader in American exploration and settlement in what is now Mississippi. After reaching America via Spain on a voyage from Havana to Mobile Bay on November 4teenth, 1594, Hernando explored much of present-day Alabama and parts of Georgia before landing on the Gulf Coast near Santa Rosa Island on December 8th. Continuing his journey northward he reached Belle Isle (now Biloxi) on January 12th and established Fort Moultrie there two days later. From here he began exploring the interior of what is today Mississippi by sailing upriver to reach Yazoo River (nowlake Miss.) On July 5th he discovered a bay at Point Hope on Lake Okeechobee where he built a small fortification known as Moulton Bluff which served as a intelligence center for all military campaigns against Florida during the French and Indian War era

Hernando, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 3,980 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The community was founded on a nearby plantation in 1834 by Hernando de Soto and his brother-in-law, David Robertson. Hernando's father had also been born in Mississippi and moved to this area some time before that. The first store in Hernando was established by the Smith family around 1875. They operated out of a log cabin on the edge of town until they built a more permanent structure near the post office in 1876. By 1910, there were 9 stores and 1 grocery store in town with an additional 6 businesses serving as telephone companies between 1915 and 1923. In 1951, when Hernando became an unincorporated community within Jackson County, it reverted to its original name - Hernando after General James Boggs who served as governor from 1898 to 1902 during Reconstruction period. After Boggs' death in 1925, his widow set up a trust which purchased all of her husband's land east of Interstate 55 for development into what is now known as Jackson County Community College District #1 (now Jackson County Community College). The college district would be dissolved in 1983 when the city of Memphis annexed it into its boundaries; however, portions of the college district remain extant today as part of Jackson County CCD #2 which covers much of eastern Hawkins County (including parts of Prentiss and Stark Counties) northward to I-55.
Hernando’s story began in the early 1800s when the area was part of Spanish Louisiana. The first white man to live in Hernando County was John Dillard, who arrived in 1820. He built a cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River and named it Hernando. In 1827, he married Maria de la Cruz and they started a family. The Battle of Hernando took place on May 8, 1837, during the American Civil War. A group of Confederate soldiers led by General Braxton Bragg came across a detachment of Regular U.S. troops under Colonel John Cranch at the mouth of the Arkansas River. The battle ended with Confederate losses while Ulysses S. Grant emerged victorious as commander of Union forces in Mississippi Territory after his victory at Vicksburg two years earlier. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected president and gave Mississippi its own state government for the first time ever. In 1865, following Reconstruction which ended slavery in America, Hernando became an all-white county again with white men only able to vote if they resided within one mile of a black person’s home or business. Hernando is now known as one of the most diverse counties in Mississippi due to its large number (over 60%)of minority residents including African Americans, Latinos/os, Native Americans/Alaska Natives, Asians/Pacific Islanders and whites who identify as Hispanic or Latino
