The town was originally known as Houma. In 1837, the French colonists named it after Jean-Baptiste Héréditaire de Chastellux, marquis de la Fayette's son who had died in England while on an official trip to North America. After some debate among the colonists over which name to give their new settlement, they settled on Houma because it sounded like a place where people would gather for fishing and trading purposes. Houma became a large community with about 60 inhabitants by 1838. By 1850, Houma had grown to more than 400 residents and was becoming an important center for trade and culture in central Mississippi. The town continued to grow until 1862 when Confederate forces invaded Mississippi during the American Civil War. After being sacked by Union forces, Houma slowly grew back into its previous size but never regained its status as a major center of commerce or culture after the war. In 1925, Houma suffered what is considered one of the most devastating natural disasters in United States history when Hurricane Andrew struck just north of the city limits killing more than 140 people and causing extensive damage across much of central Mississippi including parts of Hernando Island National Wildlife Refuge., Today, Houma remains an important retail and cultural center within central Mississippi with a population of around 1,000 residents. Its attractions include several museums including The Louisiana Purchase Museum which tells the story of how Louisiana became part of America following its purchase from France in 1803.,
