Hernando, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hernando was founded in 1830 by Spanish colonists as San Fernando de la Bahia. The name "Hernando" comes from the Spanish word "hernán" meaning "to increase." The first white settlers in Hernando were José Andrés and Narciso Pérez. They arrived in 1830 and 1831 respectively. In 1834 they founded the town on land that had been donated to them by José Ortega y Gasset. When Hernando was founded it was one of several small settlements scattered around what is now Jackson County due to its location at the head of navigation on the Natchez River. In 1836 two men from Mobile – Isaac Sears and Nicholas Biddle – started a store in what is now downtown Hernando and named it Sears & Co.. This became an important commercial center for early residents of Hernando because it served as their main source of income until after statehood when mail service began operations between Montgomery and Jackson County. -In 1840 Daniel Webster bought 2 acres (0 km2) east of downtown for $5 which formed today's Webster Avenue/Webster Street intersection. He then built his home there known as The White House (since demolished). Mr Webster used this property as his office during Reconstruction when he represented Arkansas in Congress -In 1865 General Ulysses S Grant ordered Major General John Crain to move all Confederate materials out of Old Monroe county into central Mississippi so that they could not be used against Union forces within Confederate territory
