Hernando, Mississippi is a small town in Price County, Mississippi. It is located on the banks of the Pearl River, about 25 miles east of Jackson and 30 miles west of Memphis. The Ewings ran their business until 1916 when it was purchased by JW Sweeny who sold it to his son John Wesson Sweeny in 1916. The store continued to be run by John Wesson Sweeny until he died in 1978. His widow kept the store open until 1985 when it closed due to lack of business. It reopened as a gift shop in 2007 under new management before closing again for good in 2011 In 1971 Hernando had its first fire fighting unit which served as backup for the Jackson Fire Department during floods that year In 1984 Hernando received its own volunteer ambulance service which continues today
