Hernando, Mississippi is a small town located in Lee County, Mississippi. The population of Hernando was 1,021 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first white person to live in what is now Hernando was James Fenton, who arrived in 1824 from Kentucky. He built a log cabin on the west bank of the Missouri River and named it Fenton's Log Cabin. In 1827, Fenton married Anna Maria (née Cochran) and they moved to what is now Muskogee County, Oklahoma. They had six children: James Fenton II (1829-1901), John Cochran (1830-1920), Anna Maria Cochran (1833-1914), Martha Jane Cochran (1835-1921), and Evaline Augusta Cochran (1837-1900). In 1841, when Andrew Jackson became president of the United States, he selected Hernando as his new hometown because its location on the Red River made it an important center for river commerce and trade. On July 4, 1841, Jackson delivered a speech in which he announced that Hernando would be his new home for two years while he served as governor of Tennessee. Fenton donated land toJackson for the city's foundation and developed it into one of Mississippi's most prosperous communities during its early years. By 1840, there were 400 homes in Hernando and prostitution was legal upon request; goods such as flour could not be transported without paying tolls payable by either side of the river. In 1862 Union General William Tecumseh Sherman captured Hernando after a three-month siege; within days all but 10% of its residents had fled or been killed or enslaved; over 900 homes were destroyed or burned including many owned by prominent citizens like Judge George Wirtzthaler and Drury Laddauby Sr.; only 5% remain standing today due to arson or neglect over time. During Sherman's occupation some 7800 local Confederate soldiers were barracks with their families living off army rations while more than 3000 slaves escaped to join their masters across Arkansas and Texas resulting in about 12% loss lunar average slave population per year throughout American Civil War period
