The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Hernando County were French colonists. They brought their firearms with them, and began trading with local tribes. Gunsmiths in France fashioned rifles, pistols and other weapons for the Native Americans who lived near them. The British arrived in 1795 and soon after they imported guns from France. Over time, there was a growing rift between the English and French settlers over gun rights. The British wanted all native people living near them to be proficient at using arms, while the French thought only those who could afford it should own firearms. This led to sporadic warfare between the two groups until 1800 when a treaty was signed which allowed English settlers to purchase land around Mobile Bay for hunting purposes. Thisopening of Mobile Bay gave European settlers access to shipping lanes leading upriver into what is now Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. As trade increased along these routes, so too did developments on both sides of the bayou as traders developed new techniques for manufacturing goods moving downriver from St Louis or Paris. By 1810, severalgunsmiths had formed businesses specializing in making rifle stocks, barrels and other components for riverboats travelling through Mobile Bay on their way northward or southward transporting goods across the Gulf of Mexico. Hernando is a city in and the county seat of Hernando County, Mississippi. The population was 31,591 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Mississippi River between Mobile and Jackson–the state's only border with Alabama. The river forms the eastern edge of Hernando's metropolitan area, which includes both Jackson and Mobile. The first European settlers in what is now Hernando County were French Jesuits who arrived in 1699. They named the area "Jourdain" after Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, their superior general in Louisiana. Jesuit missionaries founded a mission near present day Destin in 1765; this was followed by others until 1801 when all but one of the missions were closed due to Indian attacks. In 1805, Spanish traders led by José de Armas discovered rich gold deposits along the lower Ohio River and decided to explore these resources further than they had before. They called this new land "Hernando" after General Hernán Cortés' brother-in-law Fernando de la Rúa y Pérez de Guzmán y Orellana (1685-1758), Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry for Spain's army during its invasion of Mexico City in 1769 under King Carlos III of Spain. In 1800, following Mexican independence from Spain, California became part of United States as well as Texas; however, no boundary changes were made between Mexico and America west of the Arkansas River until November 3rd, 1846 when Texas became an independent republic governed by a provisional government consisting mainly of Mexicans—specifically Santa Anna—and American citizens who had loyalty to Mexico rather than to any U.S.-administered state or nation within America proper (New Mexico Territory still remained part of latter). Hernando, Mississippi is located in the heart of the Delta region and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over a thousand years. In 1818, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered this area and named it after his brother, Fernando de Soto. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Hernando was built in 1824 by United States soldiers during the Mexican-American War. It was called Fort Moultrie and served as a military post until 1836 when it was abandoned due to Indian attacks. In 1830, the town of Bolivar was founded on the west bank of the Mississippi River by James K. Polk. He intended to establish an American outpost that would monitor Mexico's downstream trade with Great Britain. However, Polk's venture failed and Bolivar eventually reverted to French control. In 1836, Hernando became part of Ulysses S Grant's Overland Expedition as part of his push into southern Texas during the Mexican-American War. After capturing Brownsville on July 20th, Grant established himself at San Augustine on October 12th and began preparations for an attack on Mexico City. However, within two weeks of arriving in Hernando, Grant learned that Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna had surrendered Mexico City to General Porfirio Díaz under terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Grant decided against attacking Mexico City and instead retreated back upriver to Corpus Christi where he arrived on November 17th after spending four days marching through hostile territory full of Indianschiefs and bandits known as "The Gadsden Ring". When he reached Corpus Christi he ordered Admiral David Dixon Porter to bombard Vera Cruz without warning its inhabitants so that they would not resist should war break out between America and Spain over their shared boundary changes in North Americabeckoningaleagueof Cádiz RoadsandLloyd Islands). On January 6th, 1898 Commodore John Fiske sailed forth from Galveston Bay with sixteen warships carrying nearly three million troops assembled for what became known as World War I - The Spanish-American War - with American participation only after President Grover Cleveland issued an executive order declaring war on Spain following Chancellor Francisco Justus von Bismarck's Germany Pact declaration six months earlier which saw Germany support Austria while Austria supported Russia (see also: Spanish-American War). On April 14th Rear Admiral George Dewey led a force composed largelyof destroyers USS Schleyer (DD 565), USS Canandaigua (DD 794)and USS Puebla (AG 2) against CSS Florida (CVA 68),flagshipof Cruiser Squadron 3 commanded by Captain John Jellicoe off Cape Tampa Peninsula near Cuba - Battle of Santiago Bay/Juan Cabrillo Pass.- Disputed Capture or Death Of Commodore Dewey.- Battle off Guantanamo Bay resulting in one death amongst US sailors.- Commodore Dewee recieved Medal Of Honor at ceremonies later held at Coast Guard Station Jacksonville Landing.(See also: World War I timeline). With both sides heavily armed with artillery and machine guns along with small numbers of infantry and cavalry units totaling approximately 350 men under command including First Lieutenant Alvin York(USMC), Ensign Edward Preble(USNVR), Private First Class Charles Ewell(USA)and Corporal Harlan Goudreau(USASHP) battle ensued around Santiago Bay/Juan Cabrillo Pass involving vessels from all five fleets operating against each other using several different types of torpedoes fired from close range shore batteries ashore; however no significant damagewas done beyond minor sea borne casualties sustained by USS Florida . commander Capt Jellicoe reported "I never lost sight or sound of my ship...She rode up like a cat". Commodore Dewee’s flagship HMS Repulse ,destroyed early in action late morning 15 April 1898 while Captain Jellicoe succeeded him aboard HMS Beagle , having replaced him aboard Beagle prior to her departure from Santiago Bay.. Hernando was a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. It was founded in 1836 by General Hernando Bueno and his brother-in-law, José de la Vega. The community grew slowly until the early 1840s when it began to rapidly grow thanks to its location on the Yazoo River and its fertile soil. In 1845, Hernando became a county seat of Jackson County. By 1860, it had a population of over 2,000 people. By 1870, the community had shrunk to fewer than 100 people due to the arrival of railroads and other factors. However, it continued to exist as an agricultural center until the late 19th century.
