A post office called "Hernando" was established in 1843, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1846, General Andrew Johnson appointed Major John Pemberton as the first U.S. marshal of Mississippi after he had been driven out of Georgia by Confederate forces. Pemberton arrived at what is now Hernando on November 3 that year with orders to investigate complaints of lawlessness in the area. He found only friendly Indians living there and reported his findings to Johnson on December 11th. In 1865, General James Kenedy ordered US Cavalry Regiment #4 under Colonel George Armstrong Custer to march through central Mississippi towards Mobile Bay for an attack against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee that was supposed to open up another front in the Civil War overall; however, this plan never came to fruition due to Confederate resistance from within their own ranks at Centralia Springs near Tupelo – which led directly into Sherman's march through Tigerskin country (the Battle of Atlanta) two weeks later on October 8th instead: thus ending any hope for a Union victory over Confederate forces during that crucial period leading up to Appomattox Court House four days later on April 9th1865). Afterward, many people moved away from what became known as "Hernando".
