Hernando is a small town in Mississippi, located about 25 miles south of Jackson. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first European to visit Hernando was Fray Francisco de Paula y Ayala on July 14, 1592, during his exploration of what is now Louisiana. Juan Ponce de León discovered Hernando Bay on November 4, 1509 while sailing across the Gulf of Mexico. Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés reached the bay on December 12, 1508 and named it after himself, San Pedro de la Marina (San Pedro's Harbor). In 1821 Governor Andrew Johnson designated it as a U.S. military post and named it Fort Pulaski after General James Pulaski who had fought in the Mexican-American War and in the War for Independence from England. With that name came increased military activity due to its proximity to Mobile and Alabama Railroad lines which made it an important transportation hub for cotton production throughout much of America during the 19th century. It lost that significance when railroads were built further away in more developed areas such as Memphis or Jackson but has continued to be a popular tourist destination since then thanks to its educational opportunities including four colleges (University of Mississippi; Hinds Community College; Mississippi State University; and Southern Illinois University Carbondale) and its lush landscape with rolling hills and picturesque coves dotting its countryside.

In 1892, Lieutenant Colonel James Cushman of the Union Army garrisoned at Corinth established a post known as "Camp Jackson" about mile (1 km) east of present day downtown Hernando on land given to him by General John Fenton during the Corinth Campaign of 1885-86. This post served as headquarters for all military operations near Corinth until its abandonment two years later due to strategic deficiencies within the then new Ulysses S Grant Corps command structure which included control over all significant military and civilian installations within three miles (5 km) radius from Confederate overall command center at Corinth . The Post Office was established at Camp Jackson on October 12, 1886 by order of Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer Jr.. However, no mail passed through that outpost until 1889 when Couzens Randolph became Postmaster and developed an efficient postal service with five commercial posts operating out of camp Jackson between 1890 and 1901 including one stagecoach stop located just north of town limits (). In 1902, CampJackson reverted back to its original name - Headquarters & Depot for Cass County - becoming an important nod to both its historical significance and role within Cass County government which had evolved since its establishment less than thirty years earlier. The following year saw another important change when Drury Gilmore bought 1/2 interest in Stroudsburg Railroad company from J M Roberts who also owned part thereof extending into Marshall county northeastward from Memphis Tennessee via Mobile Alabama crossing Big Belt Bridge southeastward thence along Mobile River Valley northwestward tracing modern day US Highway 61 passing through Mississippian city limits just south of old City Hall property line; thus establishing Stroudsburg Railway Company Passenger Station located adjacent thereto across railroad tracks east side street lot private lot cornering present day I-10 highway although never actually connected with railroad trackage directly; later still Amalgamated with Gulfport Railroad Co affording easy access via high water crossings above river against fortifications southwest edge former Arkansas state line connectingoodoo Old Clarksville community site approximately two miles (3 km) southeast today's Meridian football stadium site formerly used by Red Lobster restaurant prior to 1978 development According to oral history historian Joe Gibbs III: "Hernando was founded by Isaac Morse who came here around 1840."
