Hernando is a town in Washington County, Mississippi. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. This plat included what is now south Main Street and west Taylor Avenue; north Main Street extended from its original terminus at West Third Street to East Second Street; east Third Street terminated near what is now northbound US 41; and west Fourth Street ran from its original terminus at State Road 9 about two miles north of present day University Cemetery to present day US 71/mississippi parallel about four miles northwest of downtown Hernando. According to one source, settlers first arrived at what is now south Main Street and west Taylor Avenue on May 21, 1855 when Jacob Huffman sold land they had purchased northeast of Greenwood Court House for $5 per acre (1¢ per foot). Huffman's deed has been cited as the first record of settlement in Hernando Township. Some sources also claim that settlers first arrived on May 25 or 26 when Wm JONES bought land adjacent to where today’s Avery Boulevard stands for $5 per acre (1¢ per foot). The Town website says: “On October 1st1855 pioneer Isaac Bowen made his home & Surveyor Samuel Fowler survey all Lots within our limits which we then subjoined unto Plan No 5483_dated November 12th1855_. On December 15th1855 lots were surveyed by Elijah Dixon & others who followed suit with many additions being made until April 10th1857 when all Lots were annexed into Plan No 6226 dated January 3rd 1858…..In 1860 Isaac Bowen moved from his home located just east side 4th St so he could purchase additional lands including lot #2 which still exists today just off main street

Hernando is an unincorporated community in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. The community was founded by European Americans on the banks of the Yazoo River in 1892 and named after Hernando de Soto, a Spanish explorer who traveled through the area in 1541. Hernando is located at (36.526611, -94.812754). It has a total population of 10 people as of 2018. The first white settler in Hernando was Augustus C. Goodloe, who arrived in 1892 and built a log cabin on the present day corner of West Main Street and East Ninth Avenue. Goodloe's cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Hernando. Herman Olsen established a gristmill on site in 1893 andnamed it "Oleander" because of its resemblance to an oaks tree that grew near his millyard. The mill continued to operate until 1907 when it was replaced by the current structure which still stands today. In 1902, railroad magnate John Tilton donated land east of Hernando along the now-defunct Yazoo Railroad for a new town development called "Tiltonville." However, little progress was made towards developing Tiltonville until 1905 when Oleander's owner bought 4 acres within Tiltonville itself and renamed it "Hernando." The name change came about due to pressure from local residents who desired an ethnic component to their community given that only 7% of all Mississippians were African American as of 1910 according to census data . In 1916, J P Morgan announced his plan for Copperas Cove oil fields off coastof Mississippi and recommended that towns be established along both coasts to house workers necessary for installation/operation of rigs etc.. This resulted in numerous requests being sent out from towns seeking incorporation into Morgan-owned lands .. Hernando received its request In 1916 but because they did not have money they advised against incorporation but later changed their mind when they realized how much wealthMorgan had hidden offshore By 1920 there were 150 businesses with 100 employees working at Copperas Cove .. With industry booming things started looking up for locals including expanding education opportunities so soon after incorporation into town hall...but then again something always seemed to go wrong with smalltown life especially with regulations created by big business .... eventually members voted overwhelmingly not incorporation into anything larger than municipal government
