By 1830, however, only 153 people lived in Hernando – all farmers or their families who depended upon agriculture for their income. The town’s earliest documented inhabitants include Joshua Simmons (1801-1886), an enslaved man who arrived from Georgia with his family in 1820; John Pritchard (baptized 1796), an indentured servant who worked forCaptain Solomon Marks during 1821-22; James Fenton (1799-1869), a planter born into slavery but emancipated by Act of Congress in 1865; Moses Phelps (1800-1892), an attorney and lawyer who served as clerk to U.S. Senator Henry Clay from 1850 until he resigned due to health problems in 1862; George Washington Coker (baptized December 8th 1800?), an unknown white male slave who joined Captain John Smith’s household around 1840 and likely remained with him until 1851 when he was sold to Sam Houston Sr.; Daniel Webster Whitehead (March 21st 1800 – May 2nd 1861?), white male slave purchased by Mr. Whitehead from Drayson Price near Natchez on October 10th 1800 There is no record of any formal meetings or meetings between locals and federal officials until 1823 when traders Jno Rankin & Alexander Wilson met with US commissioners Joseph Cook & Thos Bryant about trading goods between New Orleans & Mobile Bayous “I found out that they had been informed by a certain person situated at New Orleans that I should be thereabouts this morning if possible I desire you gentlemen will go down & Inform them selves whether I am really come hithertoexport trade or not true? Hernando was founded in 1817 by Spanish colonists. The town developed around a small river, the San Jacinto, which flows through it. The town was named after Hernando de Soto, one of Spain's most celebrated conquistadors. The town experienced some growth and decline during its early years. However, it became an important center for slave trade in Mississippi and eventually developed into a major cotton-producing region. The town also served as a military post during the American Civil War. After the war, Hernando slowly declined until it disappeared from existence in the 1920s.
