Hernando is a small town in Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,749 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in what is now Hernando arrived in 1815. They were traders and travelers who spent their winters in nearby Mobile and Pensacola, Florida. In 1821, they founded the town of Hernando on a bend in theMississippi River just below present-day Vicksburg. The name "Hernando" means "place where black people live." After San Fernando's death, his widow founded the first Female Seminary in America at Vicksburg (later renamed Starkville) in 1840 under the guidance of revolutionary hero Sarah Grimké Hughes (1781-1864). Thereafter many women throughout the antebellum South taught moral values and cotton farming methods to local Native American students; some became accomplished teachers and mothers themselves. In 1860 Hernando had 14 stores, seven boarding houses and one school; there were no churches or other public buildings until after 1865 when a Methodist church was built adjacent to Union cemetery which still stands today. By 1870, most of what is now Pike County had been annexed into Hernando, including parts of what are today Livingston and Stark counties. The railroad brought new industries such as cotton ginning and meatpacking to Hernando, which helped contribute to its rapid growth during this time period. Additionally, many white women from nearby Meridian moved here to work on plantations during this time period. One notable resident during this time was Mrs. Anna Julia Posey (1805-1876), who started a school in downtown Hernando that still exists today. Today, much of what once lay within the boundaries of Hernando has been developed into adjacent townships such as Pearl or Livingston Heights; while portions still remain rural farmland subject to crop rotation and other agricultural activities unique to those areas. As one of Mississippi's fastest-growing cities during its early years – thanks largely to annexation – Hernando experienced some significant growth issues over the years; however, recent efforts have aimed at addressing these issues through redevelopment and community engagement initiatives throughout the townspeople themselves.
