Hernando was founded in 1842 by Hernando P. DeSoto, an American general and explorer who had led expeditions into the Gulf of Mexico and across Central America. The town was named for the Spanish adventurer Hernando de Soto, who had explored this area in 1539-41. Hernando grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location at the crossroads of two important routes: the Yazoo River connected Memphis, Tennessee, with points east; and a railroad ran from Jackson, Mississippi, to Mobile, Alabama. This railroads allowed goods and passengers to be shipped directly from Memphis to New Orleans or Houston without having to go through Jackson or other towns on their way. The population of Hernando peaked in 1910 at around 10,000 people; however, it slowly declined over the next few decades as a result of various factors such as increased competition from surrounding communities and agricultural production becoming more efficient. By 1990, only 1,500 people still lived in Hernando proper. However, it is still a significant cultural and tourism center within Mississippi because of its unique history and architecture.
