Hernando, Mississippi is a small town in the southern US state of Mississippi. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census and it is part of Jackson County. The name "Hernando" comes from Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. He sailed along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi in search of new lands to explore in 1539-1540. He named one of these new lands after his friend and mentor, who had also journeyed down that coast many years before: Hernando de Soto's Landing on Bayou Teche near present day Meridian. Hernando's Landing served as a stopping place for travelers on their way southward; it was also a point where Native Americans could trade goods with European traders. In 1692, French colonists established Fort Saint John (now known as New Orleans) on the site of Hernando's Landing. This outpost became an important center for French trading interests along the Gulf Coast because it offered passage through the Great Lakes region to Europe without having to go through British or Dutch ports. In 1803, during what is known as the Louisiana Purchase, Mexico acquired Florida from France; this acquisition increased Mexican control over much of Alabama and other southwestern US states north of Mexico City. The area around modern-day Hernando became part of Indian Territory under United States jurisdiction when Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1845. At that time, most people living around modern-day Hernando were Creek Indians who had been forced out by Anglo settlers during Reconstruction Era efforts to improve conditions for African Americans in post-Reconstruction America. The townships that make up today's eastern portion of Jackson County were organized into townships within Jackson County in 1868; this change was occasioned by desire among some local officials to reduce duplicate government services and consolidate power within their respective jurisdictions so that each township could provide better services to its constituentsrather than depending exclusively on county governments for essential resources such as water supply and education funding. This move toward self-government helped spur economic development in those communities during subsequent decades; today, many residents are still affiliated with their township or village governments rather than with county governments which have become less involved in community life since then). Hernando was a small town in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States, until the early 20th century. The town name is taken from Hernando County's first white settler, Spanish-born Francisco de la Garza y Mendez. The community of Hernando began as an agricultural village in 1851, and by 1865 it had a population of 10 residents. In 1870 the town was renamed for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during his military campaign against the Confederate States of America. In 1881 the first school in Hernando opened. The following year saw the founding of a Masonic Lodge and BaptistChurch. A post office was established at Hernando in 1886, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The last resident to die within the limits of Hernando Township occurred on October 25, 1911.
