In 1870, Hernando became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five council members. In 1898–99, war destroyed much of southern Mississippi and Hernando lost much of its Commerce Street business district; however, its citizens refused to flee and rebuilt their city hall and other infrastructure. In 1902–03, Drury built the first electric light plant in Harrison County; it served Hernando until 1922 when new power plants were built near Oxford and Hammondsville. During World War II, Hernando played an important role as a military airfield for American forces stationed in Gulfport; many planes were brought down here from nearby Biloxi airport during the Battle of Hattiesburg on November 11-12 1944. The town's residents also helped build radar installations at Bay Minette Air National Guard Base during that time period as well as numerous other local homes and businesses during that time frame Harrison County experienced significant growth following Hurricane Katrina (2005) which left most towns along Gulfport's coast without power or water for up to six weeks after landfall Additionally some homes have been reconstructed but most are not livable because they lack flood damage insurance Aftermath of Katrina led to increased business activity downtown including restaurants and bars which draws people from throughout Harrison County
