The Hattiesburg, Mississippi Gun Case Museum is located in the downtown area of the city. The museum was started in 1979 by retired detective sergeant Donald “Donny” Pemberton and his wife, Linda. The museum is a small but interesting collection of firearms from around the world. The first gun case at the HattiesburgGunCaseMuseum was a Winchester Model 1892 rifle that belonged to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The rifle had been surrendered to Union forces during the Civil War and was brought to Hattiesburg as part of a peace negotiation process on December 12, 1863. While in town, Lee used it to shoot an animal while staying at the Beale House Inn. In 1977, Donny Pemberton passed away and Linda took over running the museum. She continues to operate it as both a collector’s item and research tool for historians who study American gun culture. In addition to its rifles, shotguns and handguns, the museum also has significant collections of cannons and muskets from around America including examples from New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Nashville Tennessee; Springfield Virginia; Hernando County Alabama; Charleston South Carolina; Mobile Alabama; San Antonio Texas; Prairie du Chien Wisconsin; Waco Texas; Eagle Pass Arizona Territory (now known as Aztec Hills); Tucson Arizona Territory (now known as Sahuaro National Monument) and more than 20 European firearms cartridge cases from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium/ Holland/ Luxembourg Switzerland among others! Donnelly Pemberton began collecting guns when he was just 22 years old in 1953 after moving to Mississippi from Missouri where he worked for Monsanto Chemical Company’s Research Division office in St Louis Missouri. He would go on to own many antique firearms dealerships throughout his career including one located in Memphis TN until his retirement in 2003 which he donated equipment and functioned as a pistolsmithing academy until his death in 2016 at age 86 years old!

Hattiesburg is a city in Mississippi and the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 25,806 at the 2010 census. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Hattiesburg was by Frenchmen on a bluff overlooking current day downtown on April 3, 1795. They named their colony "Bienville" after Lieutenant General Jeannot Bienville who had led an expedition from France to explore all of Mississippi Territory in 1786-87 during the French and Indian War. In 1814, two British colonists settled near present day Hattiesburg as part of Treaty Hidalgo which ended the American Civil War between United States forces and Confederate States troops under General Robert E. Lee. The town site was chosen because it lay on high ground that would provide security for traders traveling through West Tennessee acrossMississippi River Valley bound for Natchez downstream on Lake Pontchartrain. In 1837, Isaac Newton Searles built a sawmill on White Bluff Creek; this mill became known as Searles' Mills because its founder purchased land along White Bluff Creek that formed the nucleus of today's downtown Hattiesburg district (later called "Old Town"). At this time there were only about twenty residents living permanently or temporarily within what later became known as Downtown Hattiesburg; however business activity continued throughout winter months with goods being brought downriver then unloaded at nearby warehouses before being transported east to other markets around Mobile Bayou where they were sold or stored until needed again during springtime when trade returned to locales such as Meridian/Jackson A cotton gin was added to Searles' mills soon after construction began due primarily to increased demand from package shipments arriving from New Orleans via water transportation provided by steamboats plying the Mississippi River system based at Morgan's Ferry just upstream from Baton Rouge 1862 marked Chattahoochee Dam's opening which created an even greater demand for cotton exports resulting in more than doubling production at existing mills including those at Searles' Yards By 1870 only 5 percent of output still came direct from fields but textile prices had quadrupled thanks largely to advances made by Northern manufacturers working out arrangements with British exporters whereby domestic raw materials were bought back at fixed price points against export proceeds thereby creatinga 'cottonExport Development Corporation' (CEDC) During World War I effort was made by Ulysses S Grant & others Director Emeritus Luther Hodges To make war production available without combatting conscription thru purchaseof large quantities Of munitions thru CEDC Agreements reached with allies
Hattiesburg, Mississippi was founded in 1836 by the brothers Elijah and John Fisk. The town became a center for cotton production after the American Civil War. The city was renamed Hattiesburg in honor of Ulysses S. Grant in 1896.
