Hattiesburg, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 30,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. Hattiesburg was founded on October 12, 1871 by General John C. Breckinridge and Rear Admiral David Dixon as a port for cotton shipping to the Gulf of Mexico. The town became an important railroad junction and manufacturing center until the early 20th century when mechanization began to take hold in America. In 1915, Hattiesburg became one of two cities in Mississippi to be approved as a consolidated school district; it remains one of only four districts in Mississippi that has been so approved. The history of Hattiesburg begins with General John C. Breckinridge who arrived here on October 12th 1871 from Memphis, Tennessee with his regiment the 3rd Kentucky Infantry (now known as Hogsback Regiment). He had come to help develop cotton plantations along the Gulf Coast and found that there was little available land here for farming purposes due to low soil elevations and lack of rivers or streams which would have provided irrigation water necessary for crops grown hereabouts. To make up for this deficiency he built a fortification named Fort Sanders around which he developed what would become known as "the city". Breckinridge's work helped lay the groundwork for what would become one of America's most important economic forces during its post-Civil War years: Cotton production continued unabated despite shortages caused by Union blockade policy while other industries failed to join in because they could not compete with slave-based American industry- something that still exists today albeit more subtly through import tariffs levied against certain countries’ exports while certain others enjoy free trade status). Due to these factors hatters also began arriving here from all over America looking for work on those newly developing plantations where there was precious little else available due both to competition from inland oil producers and the limited area suitable for farming given highlands were drained by rapids making access difficult or impossible even for small farmers whereas nowhere else can you find large tracts of fields laid out perfectly parallel throughout narrow valleys like you do in Appalachia or Louisiana! As soon as he got his first taste of what life could be like living among these new people who seemed willing and able to build their own lives & businesses rather than rely solely on those around them he quickly realized how important it was that this new community be supportive & protectable from outside influences lest it slowly start decline & fall apart under its own weight! This desire led him shortly thereafter - without any input from anyone -to establish himself as Mayor & Town Councilman...a position which allowed him considerable power over local events & affairs much like today's City Manager whose job description includes overseeing all aspects of municipal government including but not limited to services such as fire suppression, property maintenance etc., but also enjoys broad latitude when it comes time deciding how best To Serve Our citizens!!! Today we continue right where our ancestors left off 50+ years ago by being dedicated service providers unto our fellow citizens!!
