The Hattiesburg Red Dot Sight History began on October 1, 1919. The first red dot sight in the town was a Waco Rifle Shop located on Main Street. The shop was started by Mr. John Denton and his son, James Denton, with the help of friends and family. On October 1, 1919, Mr. Denton opened up the store at 514 S Washington Avenue and soon had customers from all over the state of Mississippi coming to purchase firearms. The red dot sight became very popular in Hattiesburg due to its easy-to-use design and accurate rangefinding capabilities. In 1945, JB Guns & Ammo moved into the space that now houses Cabela’s after purchasing World Gun Works Inc., which had been located adjacent to Waco Rifle Shop since 1915. From then until 2003, JB Guns & Ammo was the only retailer in Hattiesburg that sold both assault rifles and handguns through their store as well as ammunition through their ammo department!
Hattiesburg is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and is the county seat for Marshall County. The population was 47,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Hattiesburg" comes from the Dakota Sioux word hatti-sawa meaning "division point." The first permanent settler in what is now Hattiesburg was James Robertson in 1846. He founded a trading post on the Big Black River near present day Hattiesburg. In 1849, he built a small fortification on Mobile Bayou to protect his trading posts against Indian raids and to control access to Mobile Bayou. The town of Hattiesburg was platted in 1851 by John Pemberton, an American fur trader who had come to Gulf Coast states during the 1850s in search of new markets for his products. Pemberton named his town after General Andrew Jackson's daughter, Harriet Beecher Stowe. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell established a military encampment at Corinth, Mississippi within easy reach of Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant; this area became known as Corinth Heights and later Corinth Barracks National Military Park located there today. When Union troops sacked Corinth Heights on November 11, 1865, they destroyed much of what had been built there including Fort Pillow; this event is memorialized by nearby Fort Pillow State Park which opened in 1926 with land donated by Colonel John Tisdale McNaught and remains open today as one of four national monuments administered by the National Park Service (the others are Mount Rushmore National Monument (Oklahoma), Acadia National Park (Maryland), and Zion National Park (South Africa)). In 1889, Judge Rufus King laid out streets that would become downtown Hattiesburg following plans drawn up by architect John Witherspoon Fairchild Sr.. In 1907 Hargrave & Allyn LLP organized as The firm of Hargrave & Allyn LLP until it merged into Gibson Dunn LLP in 2003). Hattiesburg is a city in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 25,703 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh-largest city in Mississippi and the fifteenth-largest city in Alabama and Texas. The region that includes Hattiesburg became known as Yazoo County in 1819 when General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and moved his headquarters from Tennessee to Yazoo City to consolidate power with Jackson's more powerful supporters. Hattiesburg became a town on May 1, 1827, when it was founded by Captain James Fenton along the Mississippian River. The first post office was established in 1830. In 1854, an act of Congress designated the area east of US 63 as what would become Hancock County; this included most of present-day Hattiesburg. In 1865, after America's entry into World War II, the military built Camp Beauregard on land now part of downtown Hattiesburg for use as a floating airfield for allied forces during World War II. After being decommissioned in 1946, Camp Beauregard reverted to state control and memory until it reopened as a public park in 1990 concurrent with ceremonies marking 100 years since America declared war on Germany
Hattiesburg, Mississippi was founded in 1836 by the General David Dixon and his brother-in-law, Colonel John A. Hinds. The town was named for General Robert E. Lee, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as a U.S. Army general during the American Civil War. The first store in Hattiesburg opened in 1837. In 1841, a cotton gin was erected in town and began to produce cottonseed oil. In 1845, a canal was built through town and it became an important transportation link between Mississippi and Illinois.
