Frémont's addition to the townspeople' name helped give it its present moniker - Hattiesburg - meaning 'place where flowers grow'. The sweet potato crop that began being grown here in early 1838 gave rise to local nickname 'The Wizard of Cotton', due to Elijah Price's discovery of this new product at what is now known as Price Field Plantation near downtown Hattiesburg on October 15th, 1838. In fact, one account claims that price was so impressed with this new discovery that he offered to sell every hectare (2 acres) cultivated until they ran out! This planting event helped lay the groundwork for later industrial development here – including electric lights and automobiles - thanks to inventors like Humble Piezo (1863-1948), J.B Snider (1889-1962), Wm Matson (1892-1976), Averill Harriman (1920-2008) and others associated with this pivotal period in American history. In 1905 plans were established for a large cotton gin/spinnery facility adjacent to then known as Price Field Plantation but construction never began because President Theodore Roosevelt vetoed it citing concerns about water shortages following World War I . Tensions between Native Americans and settlers quickly escalated during this period of tension - some people fled to Ohio or Texas because they felt endangered by violence being perpetrated against both groups. By 1847 many farmers had left southern Mississippi due to conflicts between local Native American tribes and white men looking for resources such as coal or cotton fields - only 2% of Mississippians remained within central Illinois by 1850 despite having access to much more valuable farmland than anyone else around these parts (Dixon). In 1847 Isaac Shelby relocated his family back northward across the state line into Alabama where he established himself as a farmer and slaveholder (Hebert).
