A large influx of white settlers followed soon after with many small businesses opening up around town to serve these new arrivals including stores such as Ziegfeld & Company (founded by German immigrants), Piggly Wiggly (later known as Piggly Maggot) grocery store, Masonic Lodge No 1 (established 1865), etcetera. On December 10th, 1837 Union general Nathaniel Lyon attacked Confederate artillery battery #14 east of town while withdrawing from Enterprise during their battle for Independence Bridge; this attack marked the beginning of Battle Creek Campaign which eventually led to Union victory over Confederates operations across central Mississippi that summer culminating with Sherman's March through Jackson on November 9th 1863 ending all Confederate resistance within that state.
