Hattiesburg is a city in Mississippi, United States. The population was 128,884 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hattiesburg County and the home of the University of Southern Mississippi. The first Americans to settle in what is now Hattiesburg were white traders from Georgia who founded a trading post there in 1824. The town was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest, an early Confederate general and slaveholder who made his fortune as a cotton broker through his business dealings with Mobile, Alabama cotton merchants. In 1831, the town's first courthouse was built on present-day Broadway Street. By 1840, Hattiesburg had become one of the largest cities in Mississippi, owing to its strategic location at the mouth of Pearl River and its natural resources: oil wells had been drilled there since before 1860 and whisky production began in earnest in 1881. In 1861, during America's Civil War (1861-1865), Hattiesburg became one of Confederate states' capital cities; it remained so until May 10th 1865 when Union forces moved into downtown after capture of Jackson by Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant (1821-1914). Afterward, most southern Mississippians chose to stay loyal to their northern counterparts – except for some 60% of Hattiesburg's black citizens who sided with the Confederacy throughout the war. Reconstruction followed after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (January 6th 1863) and led to more than 1 million African Americans being Freedmen throughout much of America by 1865 – including over 100% of Hattiesbergians! The city experienced significant economic decline following Reconstruction but regained much lost ground by 1920; however it has not regained its preeminence as an American cultural center since then. Today’s City Park offers excellent views across Pearl River towards Memphis while also incorporating features such as ponds that provide habitat for fish along with exercise trails that are ideal for all ages . The city has also renovated several important landmarks such as its original municipally owned water system which opened up area previously used for slave labor - making it one stoplight from start to finish! As part of celebrations marking International Chattahoochee Day on October 8th this year – Mayor Buttitta announced plans for a new library/museum complex adjacent to City Park which would house artifacts dating back to “the beginning”of our city’s history!
