With aid from Confederate cavalry under General James Longstreet, Vicksburg surrendered on April 9th (4 days after Lee's invasion). For his services in behalf of President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, Union General Ulysses S. Grant received an award from Secretary of War Edwin Stanton that made him one-third owner ofVicksburg National Military Park which includes most of downtown Vicksburg today. The city began to grow rapidly following its incorporation as a city in 1907 when construction began on a new airport adjacent to downtown that has served as Hattiesburg's primary airport ever since. The airport still serves as one of Hattiesburg's primary points for international travel and also hosts several annual events such as the Fourth Of July parade and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony each year
