The area now known as Hattiesburg was first inhabited by Chippewa Indians and their allies who fought with the British against American forces during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). In 1819, General Andrew Jackson founded Jonesborough plantations there and named it for his friend and aide-de-camp, Colonel John Crain. When white men moved into what is now Hattiesburg from nearby Meridian in 1837, they encountered dense Choctaw Indian populations that had lived there for centuries. The Choctaws were forced to sell their land to whites at low prices and left behind their ancient villages, gravesites, and traditional trade routes that attracted European traders such as Isaac Conger in 1798 and French fur trappers Antoine de la Salle in 1800. Founded on December 20th 1861 by Confederate Major General Pemberton under command of Major General Oliver O’Neal Johnston as Fort Hindman on what is now downtown Hattiesburg, the fort served as a supply depot for Confederate forces fighting near Corinth during the Civil War (1861-1865). After Union troops captured Fort Hindman on April 6th 1865, Johnston ordered its abandonment; however, elements thereof were used to form an artificial bluff overlooking river mouth which became known as Fort Hindman Hill. When Reconstruction ended following the Civil War (1865), most African Americans fled to neighboring states such as Arkansas or Louisiana due to lack of opportunity in new South Africa after Union victory over Confederate army at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. However some black residents remained in Hattiesburg until 1887 when all businesses closed down due to redlining policies of cotton buyers throughout Reconstruction Era America which limited development opportunities for African Americans south of Interstate 15 north of Jackson Avenue
