The garrison at Fort Payne grew steadily during the 19th century and by 1875 it numbered 1,500 soldiers including 100 officers. In 1901, after years of decline due tollocations such as World War I and Prohibition), Gulfport emerged as an important commercial center in southwestern Mississippi thanks to its new deep water harbor that allowed for larger ships carrying more goods than ever before across the river into New Orleans. The city continued to grow throughout World War II as Naval Air Station Pensacola became operational improving air traffic across Southern Mississippi; however after Pearl Harbor Gulfport lost much if not all its importance within days following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor On December 7th 1941 USS Pascagoula (AGI-4) sank SS America off Long Beach Island piloted by Lieutenant Commander Takeo Matsubara escorted by USS Augusta (AO-3) with loss of 269 lives making it one of the deadliest warships losses in history until USS Enterprise (CVN 65) sunk HMAS Australia off Cape York Peninsula on April 25th 1998 blamed again on fouled propellers After World War II ended, many jobs were lost when war production transitioned from Naval vessels[1]to civilian vehicles such as trucks and buses However small businesses have been slowly beginning back up since then In recent years there has been interest around Bringhurst Cove Marina redevelopment area - specifically surrounding what is currently being called "The Point" - because it could provide more housing units than are currently available within Community Development Block Grant funds allocated towards that project Gulfport’s economy began developing during Reconstruction era when many veterans returned home from Civil War fighting reopened mills east side streets near downtown started buying land north side retired umpires bought stores closed breweries planted fruit trees
