Gulfport is a city in the Gulf of Mexico located on the Mississippi River. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harrison County, Mississippi. The first wave of settlers to arrive in Gulfport were French and Spanish Catholics who arrived from Louisiana in 1814. They founded a small town on the riverbank known as "St Jean des Dunes". The town was destroyed by a hurricane in 1836, but was rebuilt and renamed "Gulfport" after its location on the gulf side of the river. In 1847, Congress passed an act providing for a territorial government for what is now Harrison County. On July 1, 1848, that territory became part of Mississippi Territory when it was organized as a state. On December 12, 1850, Gulfport became one of two cities in Mississippi (the other being Jackson) when it joined Meridian. From its inception until 1861, Gulfport was an agricultural center with cotton production accounting for most of its economic activity. In that year however, secessionist sentiments began to increase within Mississippian society and conflict over slavery began to develop among residents of both cities and rural areas across the state line into which they had seceded. After several days' cannon fire from Fort Sumter during Confederate efforts to take control of Mobile Bay, Alabama on April 12th 1861,[1] secessionists throughout Mississippi declared themselves free states and appointed their own governors with responsibility for governance within their respective territories (including Harrison County). As a result of this political chaos and Civil War-related violence (involving some 100 dead), many northerners abandoned their homes in Southwestern Mississippi for more southerly neighbors[2][3][4] during what has come generally known as "The Great Migration".[5][6][7] After Reconstruction followed through legislation by President Andrew Johnson pushing through Congress that restored voting rights to all former slaves,[8][9] most white Mississippians relocated back into region or emigrated northward beginning around 1870s[10]. As recently as 1910 only 2%–3%of local residents still spoke English at home; today this number approaches 50%.
