After the war ended in 1865, many local businesses went out of business due to economic difficulties following Reconstructionism policies implemented by Ulysses S. Grant administration. However, some reopened including Judge Lance Corporal's Storehouse which still operates today as a popular tourist attraction located inside downtown Gulfport Historic District.
The history of Gulfport, Mississippi began with the arrival of European settlers in the early 1800s. The area was first inhabited by the Mississippian culture, which is a Native American tribe. The region became part of French Louisiana after the French and Indian War ended in 1763. In 1815, an act of Congress designated Gulfport as a port on the Mississippi River for steamboats transporting goods to and from New Orleans. The town grew rapidly during this time and soon reached its peak population size of around 10,000 people. However, economic problems caused by the railroad industry led to a decline in population over the years. In 1907, Gulfport was renamed Fort Worth by then-President Theodore Roosevelt in honor of General John Boggs who had helped lead America’s effort against Spanish colonial forces in Texas years earlier. After World War I ended, Fort Worth declined in popularity as trade slowed down due to new tariffs enacted by U.S. president Woodrow Wilson. By 1920, only 2 percent of all commerce passing through Fort Worth originated there; however, it continued to be used as a terminus for freight trains until 1976 when Interstate 10 was built nearby and bypassed Fort Worth altogether. Over time, many businesses have moved out or been closed within Gulfport limits including major retail anchors such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney as well as smaller retailers and restaurants that succumbed to competition from larger stores north of downtown or along I-10 east of town center. With few remaining commercial buildings standing today outside downtown core areas such as Old Towne Center or Southeast Commerce Street (formerly known as Main Street), much of what once characterized Gulfport's architectural heritage has long since passed away or been destroyed beyond recognition save for some remnant foundations located on key arterial streets near former commercial districts like East Broadway and Northwest Seventh Avenue near Lake Pontchartrain Park).
