Gulfport is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Gulfport is the county seat and largest city of Hancock County. It was founded by planter John Fenton in 1824 and named for its location on the gulf of Mexico. The first gun case history in Gulfport may date back to 1836 when Captain James A. Cook sailed from Portsmouth, England on his successful whaling voyage and brought home firearms and other items including cannons, artillery pieces, pistols and knives from his journey around the world. The market continued until 1865 when it was abolished following the American Civil War. In 1881, Gulfport became one of the first cities in Mississippi to be served by a telephone system. During World War II, Gulfport played an important role in supplying munitions for the war effort. In 1951, it was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places as part of its history series documenting Mississippi's history since 1792.
