After years of decline in production throughout the 1970s and 1980s due to pollution from industries in neighboring states such as Mobile, Alabama, Gulfport experienced a resurgence late in the decade thanks to investment by local businessmen led by Mayor Harry Smith who visioned that downtown would be preserved as an important cultural quarter with restaurants and nightlife options while also redeveloping much of its infrastructure including new schools and hospitals. In 2005, Gulfport was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[1]

In 1870, Hurricane Andrew moved ashore in Alabama and destroyed much of the Gulfport area; however, remnants of the town continued to exist until they were destroyed by fire in 1935. The cotton gin which stood near present-day Gulfport was once one of America's largest spinning mills; it closed in 1936.
