Gulfport is located on the Pearl River and is bordered to the north by Phenix City and to the east by Bay St. Louis. The area that now makes up Gulfport was first settled by Native Americans in the early 18th century. In 1793, John Bassett built a cabin here as part of his effort to establish new settlements in what is now Jackson County. By 1800, it had become an important trading post between Mississippians and African Americans along the Pearl River region. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction-era race riots that took place throughout America – most notably in Gulfport – many African American men were incarcerated here for various crimes such as robbery or assault on white people who dared cross their paths (known then as "intersection theft"). Afterward, much of this area became known for its cotton plantations operated by white farmers and their black workers who labored there during this time period; these plantations remain largely unchanged to this day despite being eliminated by tractor farming and other modern farming methods over the years. However, some remnants of these old cotton plantations can still be seen today around town including a few contributing structures from an original plantation called Bayou Road Plantation which still stands adjacent to US 41 just south of downtown Gulfport proper
