In 1824, a group of men from Carthage started eastward on what would become known as the Mississippi Riverboat Navigation Company's first season of navigation between Cairo, Illinois and Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania (now Pittsburgh). They called their new settlement "Gulfport." By 1830, it had grown to include land on both banks of the river where today's downtown stands. The town sprang up around these original buildings—a wharf on one bank and homes on another bank—and by 1840 there were more than 100 residents living in what is now downtown Gulfport. The completion of ferries across the Arkansas River led to an increased demand for goods brought downriver from Mobile Bay through New Orleans by steamboats; so much so that by 1852 Merchants' Exchange had been formed to handle this traffic alone! At this time also came development alongshore with builtups such as hired hands' barracks for sailors while merchants built shops ashore; piers were erected for landing boats; wharves were developed for storage; cotton ginners set up their operations; brickyards produced bricks for local churches...the list goes on! In 1865, Congress decided that Jackson County should be divided into three parts –Jackson (the most western), Hinds (the middle), and Rankin (the easternmost) counties would be organized into entity known as Iron Range District No 1 which included present day Hattiesburg and Biloxi…thus began Jacksonville proper’s growth as well! And so it went until 1978 when then-Governor Don Siegel ordered all municipal government within Jackson & Hinds Counties consolidated into a single unit effective January 1st 1979 under name “Hancock County” with City Of GulfPort serving as its Municipal Headquarter! This consolidation resulted in loss or gain of over 300 businesses located within our borders during its short tenure but ultimately solidified our position as one of America’s Most Diverse Cities!!!
