Gulfport is a small town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. Gulfport is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The city was founded by Danish immigrants in 1839 as a port for their cotton plantations in central Mississippi. By 1860, the town had grown to include an arsenal and navy yard, schools and churches, and 22 stores. In 1871 it became the capital of Hancock County; but by 1907 its population had dropped to 1,600 from 3,500 because of industrial development along the Mississippi River. In 1973 Gulfport merged with Meridian to form Meridian-Gulfport Incorporated; however, this merger failed to make much headway in developing new businesses or improving civic infrastructure. A decade later it merged again with Biloxi-Biloxi Incorporated to become Biloxi-Gulfport Incorporation; however this also failed to take off as hoped. In 2003 it reemerged as simply Gulfport Inc., which has since been its primary focus ever since. Today's economy revolves around tourism and manufacturing services such as boatbuilding and fishing gear manufacturing; although some other smaller businesses have begun emerging over time including several health food stores and restaurants as well as a number of bars/restaurants catering specifically to coastal communities near Gulfport's beachfront location. Many notable people from early Gulfport history have gone on to become prominent figures in local cultures or politics elsewhere within Jackson metropolitan area - for example former Mayor Willie Brown served two terms before leaving office after being indicted on bribery charges), while state Representative John Fleming (R) represented District 105 until he left office in 2012 due to term limits set by his party colleagues

Gulfport is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 25,824 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1894 by Jesse Gulf and James Wooten. The two men pooled their resources to purchase land in what is now Gulfport and built a cotton gin, warehouse, and other businesses. In 1916, Gulfport became an incorporated town. On December 16, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor; as a result of the attack, the United States entered World War II with Gulfport serving as its military base. After the war ended in 1945, fuel prices skyrocketed due to oil shortages worldwide; however, tides decided against moving the local port to save it from closure. In 1979-81 (two years after President Jimmy Carter's historic visit), Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of New Orleans - leaving Gulfport largely unscathed although its docks were used for transporting goods out of New Orleans during that time period. As a result of this event and others throughout Gulfport's history including hurricanes Rita and Katrina which struck during 1999-2003 respectively (the last time such natural disasters struck the city), many people have come together to help preserve its character and history since then what has been started by volunteers include organizations such as "The Community Preservation Foundation" which helps organize events like Heritage Days where various activities are held including arts & crafts shows appreciation for historical items donated from individuals or businesses closed during natural disasters also there are several walking tours available throughout year
