Grenada, Mississippi is a small, rural town in Hinds County, Mississippi. The population was 2,759 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. Grenada is located in the central part of Hinds County and has a total area of just over square miles. The first European settlers arrived on October 10, 1814 when two vessels called "Hancock's Hope" landed in what is now Grenada. President James K. Polk appointed JF Myer as its first mayor on January 1, 1815 due to its lack of representation in state government at that time. The town was founded by John Ladd and his family who made their home hereabouts until they sold land near Marshall to establish Meridian Plantation on November 15, 1818. In 1830 John Witherspoon purchased land east of Grenada from Abram Colston for $1,000 cash and moved his family heretofore unknown to live until he died in 1840 leaving behind an estate valued at $10,000 which still remains today. In 1871 Nicholas Arcand acquired this property from Witherspoon and developed it into what we know today as Arcand Park with initial construction taking place between 1870-72 under the direction of A & P Sawyer Company engineers led by Lewis Cassatt Jr.. After years of hard work and dedication by many people including local merchants Fenton Ewing (founder & president emeritus) Don Armstrong (founder & CEO), Lamar Hensley (president), Jimmie Rodgers (senior VP sales) among others; the park opened its doors to the public on July 3rd, 1971 after years of planning and anticipation by Friends Of Grenada/Mississippi Valley Historical Development Commission spearheaded by Darlene Swindlely - current vice president for parks and tourism for Hinds County – et cetera! Some important landmarks located within or near Grenada include: Fort Anderson Museum State Historic Site - built as a military outpost during Reconstruction following Civil War; Booker T Washington Birthplace National Monument - birthplace of African American leader Booker T Washington located one mile south west of downtown Grenadiana; Lafayette Baptist Church - oldest Baptist church west OF Memphis dating back to 1795; Governor Claiborne Pell House - home also used as office during Reconstruction days; Hurricane Katrina damage control Center located adjacent to US Copacabana Beach Resort ]; Hummingbird Sanctuary (); Barnes- Noble Bookstore (); Delta Airlinesoperated mini-bus terminal next door ().

The late 1800s were another difficult decade for Grenada as a result of conflicts between various factions within the community. Despite this challenge, however, many residents remain proud of their history and culture in grenadiansmoore County today. Today, grenadiansmoore County is home to a number of interesting attractions including three national historic sites – Fort Union National Monument, Clinton Presidential Library & Museum, and Jackson State Historic Site – as well as several small villages that are steeped in history dating back centuries

The area that would become Grenada was first settled by Native Americans, and then by English settlers who arrived in the 16th century. The British colony of Jamaica became part of the British Empire after its independence from Great Britain in 1802. In 1821, the British transferred control of Jamaica to Grenada, and renamed it Trinidad. Trinidad and Tobago were combined into a single country under British rule in 1958. Grenada became an independent country on November 20, 1983.
